787 fuel burn

Postby Capt NG » Tue Jun 10, 2014 5:37 pm

Info came to me today via Boeing check pilot flying at ANA... 787 flew Tokyo to Boston last week.. 14 hour flight.... Burnt 80 tonnes of fuel...80 tonnes of fuel...this is why this aeroplane will succeed with airlines and why over 1,000 have already been ordered... Bloody amazing.

Capt - what would say a 777 or A330 do as a comparison? Is the 20% more efficient figure holding fast for the 787? Even if it's 10% better, this is a game changer of a aeroplane!

Evening Adam, 777 around the 110 ton mark from LA to Sydney against the wind, average though around 100 ton..vary a little from that depending on time of year.. The A330, not really in the same class as the 787 or 777, I wouldn't know A330 figures sorry..

As a matter of interest, the new 777X quoting same figures as the 787.. Interesting times ahead.

The 787 will be a game changer.. I've said it from the start..once the teething issues are sorted, look out.. It will be the jet everything else will be benchmarked against. It's success will lay in its flexibility..it will fly Sydney to Melbourne one day, then Melbourne to LA the next..

Whatever we get I'll end up flying it..777X or 787.. Watch this space.. :D

Looks like two main aeroplanes (manned) in the future - 787 to haul pax and freight, F-35 to haul bombs & missiles!

I know of course Airbus ain't far behind with their A350 - got any good goss on it?

Not sure about A350.. The boss of EK wants an engine change for the A380 and in same press I saw the A350 is being questioned over a newer engined A330.. Like any new jet.. The A350 will have teething issues...

Gotta remember Adam Boeing took a huge risk with the 787..just like when they bet it all on the 707 and then 747.. What they have learned from the 787 will be in use 40 years from now..

Airbus is trying to leap ahead with the range and passenger load of the A350.. That's why Boeing had to expand the 777. For the most part Airbus can only play catch up.. Others may disagree, but they can't say the Airbus product is earth shattering.. The avionics have been more advanced in business jets than Airbus for years, look at the Gulfstream GV.. The 737 Max will pacify customers till about 2025..

OK, so that's 80 tonnes ,or 80,000 Kg of juice. 1 Kg of juice is 1.28435 lts, so that was 102748 ltrs of juice burnt.
The burn rate was 7342 ltrs an hr.
At cruise the distance traveled is 913 Km per hour, so it burns 8 ltrs per Km.
If your flying in a 787-8, at max capacity of 381 pax in single class config, each pax is using .021 ltr, or 21 ml per Km. This is equal to a car with one passenger getting 47.6 Km/lt, or 2.1 lts/100Km.
If your flying in a 787-9 at capacity of 280 pax, then each pax is using .0285 ltr, or 28.5 ml per Km. Equal to a car with one passenger getting 35.1 Km/lt, or 2.85 lts/100Km.
And if your in a 787-10 at a capacity of 323 pax, then each pax is using .0247 ltr, or 24.7 ml per Km. Equal to a car with one passenger getting 40.5 Km/lt, or 2.47 lts/100Km.
Definitely cheaper than driving that distance, if you could, and a s%@t load quicker.

Something to compare it to,

Kingair 350, and also me assuming a fuel burn of half what it uses on the ground at max power. Max power on the ground is about 620 lb per hour per engine. So I will assume a combined fuel burn of 620 lb total for both engines together at FL350.
620 lb is 308 lts of fuel burnt per hour, and the distance traveled is 580 Km, this is max cruise according to beech.
This is .531 ltrs per Km, which sounds a lot less than the 8 ltrs burnt by the 787, but then you generally will only be carrying 10 pax, depending on config. This works out for each pax using .053 ltr, or 53 ml per Km, pretty much 2 1/2 times the fuel per passenger. This is 18.9 Km/lt, or 5.29 lts/100Km. Equal to what a modern euro diesel gets nowadays.
Dash8's ands SAAB's etc fall closer to the Kingair end of the spectrum than the big boys.

Just heard that Emirates have cancelled their entire A350 order.

Nearly better mileage from a tank of fuel than my commodore.
