FINISHED: DesTROYer's 1/72 Academy PB2B Catalina

A place for our military aviation modellers to show their stuff. It may not be civil but it still has a home here

Yesterday was all about the 737, today I dedicated my time towards cleaning and painting up the Black Cat. After sanding back some areas that needed attention, I sprayed the wings and fuselage with a coat of Nato Black. I did this because I wanted to show a difference in colour/fading between the painted metal areas and the material covered control surfaces.

Once done and dried, I masked up the control surfaces and hit the whole thing again with Flat Black. Really starting to look good here.

Then it was finally time to attach the wings.

Then I mixed up a brew of Flat White and Red Brown and heavily diluted it with thinner and lightly misted over all the surfaces that would be faded by the sun, and less thinned ran the brush in heavier lines from the exhaust pipes down the wings.

I have to treat the undersides next. All those water landings caused a lot of wear on the paint and the glint of aluminium was apparent through the paint. Usually I would dry brush it on the edges and on the lagging eyes of the panels, which I'll do this time too, but I think I'll also dust some heavily diluted spray on the under sides as well, so its not just on the edges. What do you lot think?

Spent the day yesterday driving my Mum around the countryside to visit her sister, So i didn't get anything done on this until today. Progress was slow as I was easily distracted, but I still got it far enough along that I was about to head out to the garage and spray a gloss coat. I don't know if it was my procrastination dragging it's feet, me not wanting to go out into the cold garage, or my keenness to try something new with my Silhouette cutter, but I then ended up deciding to make up and spray the markings on. So the last few hours of model time was spent making up new masks. I really need one more day this weekend.

I'd love to see you make masks for all the stencils...
Pretending to do it TAC style with the big boys since 1987
Also, we don't need no steenkin' VLATs!

I tried mate, but the serial numbers were proving to be difficult to make up at 1/72, So I'll stick with the decals for them. As for the rest of them.

After bit of masking and adjustment the stencils worked a treat. Though the tape did remove some of the "light dusting" i had applied earlier.

So I went back out to the garage and applied some more. It was beginning to look way too light though, so another slight misting of flat black. I then dipped a cloth in some thinner and gave the wings a wipe back from front to back. This gave it a nice even grime across the markings that blended well into the paint work.

Just about ready to call this one done. Just waiting on the glue to dry on the landing lights, then I'll take some better photos.
I'm a bit disappointed with myself. Removing the masks from the blisters has exposed edges of grey primer which really shows up next to the black. I'm trying to hide it, but I think its just making it worse. It's a rookie mistake and I know better. Still it looks alright.

I'll soon be able to take it out of the WIP cabinet.

Perhaps try a black wash on the blisters to try and hide the primer, Troy?
