Not aviation related, but I need your help please.

Back in 1979 my dad left his job as an Electrician at Phillips and struck out on his own with his company 'Keysborough Electrical Contractors'. His first work van was this old Holden Coca Cola panel Van.

He's had many other vans and utes since then, unfortunately some, including the last few, have been fords, so you can see why this has always been my favourite. He is talking about retiring in the next year to 18 months and for the last year I have been trying to find a suitable model to build for him. Finally I found this diecast model that should do the job nicely.

It arrived a few weeks ago, but I have been a bit busy doing work around the house and haven't had a chance to get into the office. As you can see, the roof racks are wrong so Ill have to make a new one, I'll need to replace the pipe for some bundles of tube to represent conduit and I'll have to scratch up some step ladders, but the extension ladder is spot on. So today I put aside the Hercules I'd been working on and got started on the Van. Disassembly was easy and thankfully all the chrome pieces are separate plastic pieces which were easily removed and set aside.

I then gave it a light sand and removed the screen printed details, and masked up the headlights before giving it and the interior a coat of Mr Surfacer.

I'll wait now until tomorrow before I spray the first white coat, but I have a problem. The sign writing on the side. How am I going to pull that off? I was thinking custom decals, but the majority of the writing is white. So I think the way to go is apply vinyl cut stencils which would then be removed once the red coat goes down. Does anyone here know of somewhere I could get them made? All help and any suggestions will be appreciated.

Troy, we have a member on LSP who does what you need. His name is Randy, and he operates as StencilPal. Send him an email: sluggo@stencilpal.com. He's based in the US, which may not be convenient to your needs, but at least it's an option

Cheers guys. I sprayed the white coat, pre race, this morning, then while watching the glorious Holden victory, searched through thousands of fonts online until I found something close to the original. By the time its reduced to 4cm x 1cm high, you won't see its not exact, but it's close enough.

I've sent a master copy off to Geoff at Custom Hobby Decals and hopefully he can get back to me with good news soon.

I got some more work done last night and hope to get some detailing and clean up done this afternoon when I have finished with the garden.

The besides some bleed and a little issue on the LHS front guard, the red went on real well.

Thanks to Capt'n Wannabe for the help with the decals too.

That looks good Troy. A couple of touch ups here and there and she'll really look the goods. Please keep us posted on your progress. A mate of mine and his wife, also a RAAF member, bought an HJ Sandman in 1975 and it could have been said to be aviation related. It did quite a bit of low flying as Dave had a rather heavy right foot. At least that was his excuse and he was sticking to it.

RHB.

Finished the new garden bed and got back to my Dads birthday present.

I started out scratching some additional details. A fuel filler cap and surround were first, then the new roof racks, bundles of conduit and finally a new step ladder. The tension ladder came with the original vehicle.

The photos show more detail than would normally be seen from a normal 1/2 to 1 meter viewing distance, and the size of the model is testing me too, so please forgive the edges of the coke ribbon. Every time i try to fix it up, it looks a little worse, but using these photos I can see where I need to pay closer attention. On this test assembly, I haven't installed the windows

Image
The original interior was planned so I painted it. Here I can see I need to fix a spot on the steering wheel.

Image
Window trim needs more attention here.

Image
Not having the window piece in place, the body does not sit on the chassis straight, but you can see how its all coming together.
