Growing up in a strict TAA & Qantas household, I was brought up to hate Ansett! ;)

I'd be tempted to do the Olympic 737 with "Ollie, Millie and Dickhead" (as described by Roy & HG on "The Dream") or the nose diving 747. Speaking of the 747, I did a tour of the Sydney Airport Fire Brigade and they had photos of the event. They were told by Ansett management they could only have pictures that did not have the Ansett name visible on the wall.

One of Ansett's 747 captains used to be in our aerobatic club. He finished up as their 747 sim trainer/test captain and had a great story about unusual attitude training. Due to that infamous 20,000 foot barrel roll done by that Chinese 747 coming into LAX years ago, he had his 747 drivers go through unusual attitude recovery in the 747 sim. He'd start them out in a inverted 45 degree nose down dive and tell them to recover. Now, the 747 is building up lots of smash (speed) in this situation and every pilot who had not done aerobatics pulled through (simply pulled back on the yoke) and ended up going pretty well supersonic (well, as fast as a 747 can go vertically down!) and they ended up crashing. :(
Generally, the pilots who had done aero's simply held that inverted line and rolled (slight forward yoke and roll - not sure if any bottom rudder used, but it would help - may not handle the loads though??). It was a great example on how unusual attitude training can help pilots who fly the worlds biggest aeroplanes - when things go wrong.

Years later, GFS Flight Training (now Oxford) was instructed to give its QANTAS cadets 5 hours of aerobatic/unusual attitude training - just to get them used to what the world looks like from different attitudes - other than straight and level. I know the RMIT students at Pt Cook also do aero's as part of their training. They have a lovely red Super Decathalon down there for this purpose.

A/CAM Model Expo display programme:

2016- Ansett: 80th Anniversary Tribute
2017- The Wonderful World of Air Racing

I'm with Tony P here. My old man worked for TAA (and Qantas) for 25 years so I'll be finishing my TAA F27 for next year.

I'll be attempting to complete the ex-travel agent 707 for display, so it will be 'out of uniform' for whatever the crowd here decides.

Adam, UA's are taught to all drivers and are part of the CASA matrix in requal sessions that are done 4 times a year at QF longhaul. The effects of 'rolling g' are well documented and trained nowadays and the standard procedure for a >90 degree bank angle with nose down is to unload and then roll wings level before applying any pitch input. Rudder input is not encouraged unless necessary due the enormous stresses applied. (A300 incident in NY State: AA flight 387 comes to mind). Most jet transports, when pointed at the ground, will do everything in their power to sail straight towards Vne. Interestingly I've had ex-Roulette drivers in the sim and they've screwed up (crashed) UA's just as much as cadets. They did all procedures correctly, but the UA parameters were outside of even an ace's capabilities. It is extremely difficult to put a 380 into 45 degrees inverted, nose down attitude without already being in an almost crashed state (flight envelope exceedance) anyway.

For Tony and Andrew.....here is the perfect compromise:
Image
http://www.aussieairliners.org/b-747/vh ... 0.164.html
Qantas leased Boeing 747-438s VH-OJA, VH-OJL, and VH-OJM to Ansett to cover capacity gaps left while Boeing 747-300
VH-INH was being repaired following it's unfortunate landing incident in Sydney. So you could build an "Ansett" aircraft while still staying true to your Qantas/Australian/TAA loyalties :D
PS: In addition to the larger "Ansett" title being applied to the fuselage, note the smaller "Ansett" title above door Left 1.
Or......there is this Ansett 727 leased to TAA!!!!

Ansett sounds good. I'm in - now I just have to find something unusual to build for it!

I know Fred, but Ansett will be the focus of our display next year, (not enough room on the tables otherwise).
A TAA display might have to wait a bit :D
