Anything must be better than the Airfix DH.88 Comet Racer

Postby Nicolas_Fantich » Tue May 26, 2015 4:13 pm

Well, so far Airfix don't appear to have bothered to revisit this classic aircraft in 1/72, given they've re-released the red, black and green 'ones' in the last couple of years.

Hungarian company S.B.S Model has pulled it's finger out and produced a couple of half decent looking DH.88s in resin. I can't vouch for accuracy, but all the resin sub-assemblies appear to be complete and of good quality. I think I'd bin my Airfix kits based on this offering. Not cheap though as they go for €40 each (around AUD$56). BNA Modelworld is a local supplier for S.B.S Model and there are many other reputable mail order suppliers who carry their stock. I've purchased some resin seats in the past and they don't look shabby.

As much as I have a soft spot for the old Airfix DH88, (have an old one currently under refurb), I must say that S.B.S example certainly looks good. I could be vey tempted :D .

The Airfix one definitely leaves a lot to be desired. That SBS one looks awesome but at $56 + postage it's a tad on the expensive side. I might get one but that's probably be about it. I've got 4 Airfix ones in the stash already with detail sets so I think I'm fine. Personally for such a small model, it's not really good bang for your buck. I just like a lot more for my modelling $$$ As I said though, it's very nice :)

Just get the Aerotech kit in 1/32 scale when it's re-released. Sorta makes anything in smaller scales redundant.

Eric.

Yes Eric but not everyone can afford or have the room for such a kit unfortunately. So in my case a 1/72 one is definitely not redundant that's for sure :)

Each of us can cut the cloth as it suits our likes and our wallets ;)

But if I was building one as a gift (as I plan to for someone who thinks the DH.88 is simply the ducks nuts), then I'd go for the SBS resin kit. Having seen what Master Modeller Galliers has produced from the large scale resin kit, then I too would be looking forward to the re release of the Aerotech kit. For this bloke, the outlay would be worth it !

Not sure when its available again mate, maybe email Marsh Models and see what they have to say.

Paul, save up for one mate! it isn't a huge model in 1/32, possibly 3 times as big as a 1/72 scale.

Thanks Nicolas! The effort that went into the kit was well worth the outlay.

Seeya's at Expo!

If you can find one, and from what I have read over the years the Frog kit is generally considered the better kit in 1/72

I think that also goes for the Supermarine S6B, I never had either one of them though.
