XS-Models 1/32 Hughes H-1 Racer

Postby kfutter » Tue Dec 16, 2014 5:07 pm

This is a resin model from XS-Models of Germany. It's the short-wing version of the Hughes H-1 racer, and not a great kit, quite frankly. I had heaps of trouble with it, though I don't mind how it turned out in the end. Some of you may have seen it at Expo last year (2013). Anyway, on with the photos!

Technically this project isn't even finished, as I had planned to mount it on a small base, and pose it with the excellent white metal Howard Hughes figure from Kings Road Miniatures:

I'll get there one day!

Thanks guys. Ray, the polished metal finish is Alclad Polished Aluminium over a gloss black base. I filled, sanded and polished out all the panel lines on the kit (which were like trenches anyway), and then followed the directions. I decided to do a quick test build of a 1/48 Mustang first though, just to get comfortable with using Alclad:

Contrary to conventional wisdom, I actually used quite high air pressure (around 22 PSI) to lay down the Alclad. This leaves a slightly gritty, dusty surface, but when you polish it out with a soft cloth, you get a mirror finish.

Bloody hell.....ya "quick build" Mustang is equally beautiful.
You do of course realise that the Model Expo A/CAM 2016 display theme is:
The Wonder World of Air Racing
So you got your display contributions ready for two years running :D
