S&M/Red Roo 1:72 HS-748

Hi folks,
Well....the boys from Red Roo and Hawkeye have done it again!!!, (they really are a model-industry force to be reckoned with when they combine their energies, talents, and efforts).
I have just received my two copies (RAAF 34SQN AAF-101 and RAAF 32SQN AAF-102), of the combo limited release 1:72 S&M/Red Roo/Hawkeye HS-748.
All I can say is WoW!!! ... well done again lads!!!. Much along the same lines as the Fly/Red Roo limited edition 1:144th DC-9 release of a little while ago, the boys from Red Roo have taken a lovely kit and innovatively combined it with the best efforts of Hawkeye Models to offer a uniquely Australian-flavoured most desirable model kit.
Clean and crisp resin work by S&M and lovely decal work by Hawkeye has produced a delicately-detailed and very buildable "must have" 1:72 HS-748.





If you haven't got yours already....my humble advise would be to get off your backside and grab one now while they are still available.....it doesn't get any better than this!!!
Thanks to Red Roo for yet another "local release" that I never thought I would see.....bring on the BAC 111!!!

I've had mine for a week now and Wow is the word.

Going together fine.

However remember it is a RESIN kit.
Watch the dust which goes straight for the nose, mouth and eyes.
Also gets into the skin.
I'm no medical expert, but others in the know strongly recommend Mask, goggles and gloves when sanding, sawing and sand-papering. Spay Booth may be an over kill, but the dust gets everywhere.

I have made a few resin kits (eg. PJ Prodictions Mirage) and founding gluing a bit different for each type of resin. CA glues are the way to go.
The Draggie likes thicker such as SLo-Zap Thick CA.
Found Zap-A-Gap was not effective, as was Rocket thin - both pulled apart after 24 hours.
"Running the thin down the gap" didn't work for me.
Have not tried "2 Dollar Shop" Super Glue .
Understand Loctite has some good products.

Have glued the fuselage and wings so far and the fit is great, although I did hollow out the nose and tail cones to get a good fit. Small "injection pins" along some joining surfaces need removal ( similar to vacu-form plane treatment - but these are thicker).
Looking forward to completing these two (RAAF VIP - using pilot figure from PJ Productions and still looking for a handsome Ray to put in the cabin. , and RAN Low Viz).

Some items that are missing, and this is not a criticism, but to aid fellow modellers with accuracy.
The primary air intake for the CAU, cold air unit. It is the same shape as the generator cooling inlet duct that is fitted to the left hand side of both engine nacelles. It is just under the water line of the freight door between the freight door and the first left pax window. It was only on the left side of the fuselage.

The bubble windows for A10-601 to A10-608. I used the windows that come with the CH-47 kits. I haven't measured them, but they look like a close fit by eyeball.
And for more accuracy, the elevators need to be cut and refitted in a downward rest position as that is where they sat when on the ground.
On A10-601 only, there is a pax window in front of the right hand side bubble window, that is filled in, as well as a clear lense if front of the nose wheel well behind the radome.

Quick update on progress of my build.

Joined the wings to the wing root/spar box, using Slo-Zap Thick, clamped in place, left for three days (on Doctor's advice/orders/direction).
Back to the bench today: Small gaps at the join - no probs, small application of Deluxe Perfect Plastic Putty. Gaps filled nicely. Clean up excess with a damp cloth, and "Hey Presto" , Port/Left wing just fell off - Bugger Stbd/right wing firmly in place.
Lots of swearing, clean it up and start again.
(appears there may be a hollow in one or both of the joining faces.)
So packed both up a little and reglued. small gap has become a bigger gap.
(Resin is rigid and lacks the flexibility of "normal" plastic.)

Plan now is to concentrate on grey RAN aircraft to finish, then start on the RAAF VIP.
(Gives me a bit more time to find a "handsome" Ray to put in the cabin. )

I would love to build this LAT version of the HS-748 if there was a conversion and decals available.

PS: I note that the aircraft was planned for demos in Australia......wouldn't have got up cause our fires are so "unique"

The hopper looks reasonably straightforward, even for a hack like me...If I could find some better photos, I might just have a crack at the decals. Unfortunately, the kit's a bit out of my price range..
