DesTROYer's C-130-H A97-010 (Finished)

Postby DesTROYer » Sun Oct 12, 2014 8:15 pm

A few months back I started on a project I had kept putting off for a while, A RAAF late 70's / early 80's C-130H. While I had wanted to do this for ages, filling and smoothing out the long visible seams on top of the body scared the crap out of me. I don't know how you airliner guys do it. Anyway, I bit the bullet and started it and have made som great progress. The seams are still not as perfect as I would have liked, but its better than some past efforts.

The base kit is the Academy C-130-H kit with a lot of aftermarket add ons and some scratch building.
Image

As seen in another thread, I scratched up some new longer nacelles using two kit nacelles, cut up front and back, then glued into one unit, which I then made a mould from and cast.
Image

Aftermarket PE was then added to the nacelles.
Image

Ozmods exhausts corrected the "oh-so-wrong" exhausts that come with the kit. They don't even face the right way.
Image

PE and styrene makes up the rollers for the cargo area.
Image

Not that you see even a third of the flight dec through the windows, I spent a lot of time and PE in there.
Image

I considered scratching up the cargo bay seats, but then found these great PE ones on BnA model world. I only installed them behind the wheel well bulkhead however, as you can't see the sides in front of it and certainly won't be able too once I put some cargo in.
Image

Finally buttoned up, you get a greater idea of the size of this thing. It's HUGE!
Image

With the remained of the external PE detail applied and the Ron's resins Sponson extensions in place, it was time to start painting. Grey undersides first.
Image

Then today while waiting for the big race to get underway, I masked up and painted the first of the three came colours. Tan first.
Image

I will print out the templates for the remaining colours tomorrow morning at work and get the remaining colours on over the next few days. I'll keep you all posted.

Just amazing Troy  .....a real work of art.
The level of attention to detail, and craftsmanship as seen with this model is a real credit to you.

Thanks Ray. Hey, does this count as an airliner. The scheme Im doing, is the scheme that was in use during the airline strikes in the '80's, where the RAAF Hercs were brought in to fly commercial passengers. :)

While there were indeed dedicated "airliner/civil" variants of the Hercules marketed and built by Lockheed (predominately the L-100), alas the RAAF C-130H can't be considered an airliner in the traditional sense....even when carrying civil/commercial passengers, but it is a fair question and food for thought :D

Really nice progress Troy.

Thanks to you I have dragged another C-130 out of the stash, though as usual lately it is not an OOB build.....

I did some very minor touch ups this morning before I walked out the door for work too. I'll give it a light rub over with some micromesh tonight before giving it it's first clear coat. I have a tour of CUB tomorrow with the old man, So Sunday i'll either start on the decals if it's ready, or start a new kit.
