Great subjects for modelling. Can you tell us a bit about what the roles of these aeroplanes were - was it for nav aid and radar calibration - some such thing?

Nup. No idea mate. I'm assuming for navaid cal or something like that. My Dad used to work for DCA etc so I'll ask him and get back to ya :)

Yep.
One of the roles of the DofA/DCA/DoT and whatever they called them next month was nav-aid calibration.
Also the flight test examiners used to fly them to keep current and move around to do ramp checks.

Those AeroCommanders were the sexiest twin I ever laid eyes on...their earlier incarnations had a nasty habit of main spar wing failure, though. Bad ending always.

The F-28?
The blokes that flew them loved them...the Pocket Rocket was a phrase I heard used to describe them.

Probably the single most efficient way to turn AvTur into noise.

And didn't they do it well. I remember at Air Nuigini I was on an engine run following maintenance and we burned 9000 lbs. That was an expensive day LOL

Yep, have to agree with salty.. The F-28.... Everyone who's flown it loves it.. The G-1000's were a great machine.. " gee whizz" was their nickname around CBR CAA circles..

The CAA F-28 guys used to do some great flying, not only in Australia but in NZ and around the Pacific..

Nowadays they use a Kingair 350 I think for nav aid calibration... Great retirement job salty??!!

Yep...top job.
Might put an application in.

Maybe I could learn how to be a truck driver.
Mav, you have the number of that truck-driving school we saw on TV?
Truck Master, I think it is. I might need that.

Ah, sweet nostalgia. Had flights in both these types. The front half of the F-28 was full of testing gear and the rear had some pax seats in, which I occupied on a couple of occasions. Loved the sound of those Speys too.
