A Postcard From the Eastern Fells

Postby VH-WAL » Fri Sep 26, 2014 6:44 am

Jean and I set off back to the Lakes for a couple of days walking. Yesterday we left Glenridding on the edge of Ullswater, climbing up Birkhouse Moor to Striding Edge (readers of previous postcards and / or my blog will know about Striding Edge). It wasn't a bad day for walking, patches of cloud, patches of blue, patches of wind and patches of drizzle. So we got to Striding Edge, Jean saw the final climb that would be required to get up to Helvellyn, turned around to me and said "I aint climbing that!" So we set off back the way we came to Glenridding, a great 7 mile walk with utterly fantastic views. As we started walking back I heard this THud Thud THud noise and a RN Rescue helo flew over the edge and descended into the bowl rimmed by Striding Edge, Helvellyn plateau and Swirral Edge chucking a few orbits over Red Tarn, the small lake at the bottom of the bowl. I guess they were conducting training flying in the bowl with the strong winds that swirl over the area. I was carrying my smaller "walking" camera rather than my preferred aeroplane photography set up (unfortunate but hey that's a couple of kilos I don't have to lug up hills!)
So the upshot is I am now looking for a suitable kit to build this bird...sigh.

It's a different world in the lake district, you see more military aircraft than just about anywhere else in the UK, and yet there is no military airport, laying down on a warm sunny day (it last happened the 15th July 2001) and having a Tornado go over you at about 100' and 500 knts was just the sort of thing you needed as a wake up.

Hi Gang,
yeah staying safe, no the chopper was not for us (this time) and we will be back in 2.5 weeks.

Looking at kits for the HAR 5 Seaking.. $34 for the rough 1/72 Airfix offering, and a whopping $94 for the cheapest HAsegawa 1/48 example,
in the words of the naive Kamikaze recruit on discovering his mission "I ron't rink so!"
