Best way to cut brass rod?

Postby Tony P » Fri Aug 08, 2014 5:00 pm

Hi all,
What's the best way to cut brass rod? It's about 2mm in diameter. I need a clean cut, if I use side cutters it pinches the rod. I'm assuming a saw of some description would work? Would a cutting tool on the dremel suffice?

Look forward to your responses.
Thanks
Tony

There's a couple of ways I do it..
One is to use the cutting tool. Make sure you clamp the tube securely beforehand, though..
The other is to use a hobby knife. Place the knife in position on the tube, and push is back and forth. Allow the tube to roll with the motion of the knife. Takes a while, but gives a nice clean cut with a bit of practice.
Pretending to do it TAC style with the big boys since 1987

What Damo said Tony , on small stuff it works great . Bigger stuff you may require a tube cutter from Bunnings or some where .

I use my trusty razor saw to cut brass tube.

Just take it easy and apply light pressure and you won't deform the tube

Spotlight have tube cutters in their curtain section for about $13 which would also do the job. Bought one recently and works a treat on tubing but don't know how it would go on solid brass.

Jewellers Saw - available pretty cheaply, and is good for plastic, metal, wood - pretty much anything :)
