Alternate Primer

Postby hrtpaul » Fri Jun 27, 2014 2:33 pm

Hey peeps. I usually use the Tamiya grey or white primer on my models but I can't get it in Townsville at this point in time. Does anyone know of any other primer eg automotive that I'd be able to get locally from maybe Supercheap etc? I'm using both Lifecolor and Humbrol paints. Ta in advance :)

I don't use any primer and have never had a problem. I paint with Humbrol and Testors enamels, and Gunze and Tamiya acrylics.

I've taken to using primers all the time in the past couple of years and like to use Tamiya rattle cans too. A few weeks back I was in an automotive paint shop and bought a can of Motorspray Acrylic Primer Surfacer which is a lot bigger than a Tamiya can, is cheaper and doesn't seem too bad. But I don't know that I want to subject a model I've slaved over to something that might prove to be poor quality in the longer term, so I haven't used it much.

Ta mate. I was thinking of going along those lines. I've got the perfect models to try it out on here so I'll give it a crack and see what happens :)

I've changed to Mr Surfacer 1000 & 500 in the spray bombs. I like it better than Tamiya. The 500 is good for resin, white metal and any major conversions where a lot of sanding was done. Use 1000 for priming a kit that needs no clean up.

Paul,
Another alternative to primer, if your just looking for surface defects, is to use flat white in either acrylic or enamel, depending on what your top coat is going to be.

Good thinking Dave :) The reason I use the Tamiya one at home is that I can then use any paint over the top and not have to worry about compatibility issues between the different paints :)
