Well *that's* a jaw-dropping moment..

My oldest daughter managed to render me speechless today. Probably not for the last time, but....

Anyhow, she came to me and said "You need more plane models. I want to build one."

I'm stunned....

But now to the question. What is a good, cheap airliner kit for the more-or-less first timer? She seems to have a bit of a penchant for them..

She's built a car model previously...came out OK, too!
Pretending to do it TAC style with the big boys since 1987
Also, we don't need no steenkin' VLATs!

Brace yourself that will be the first of many ...

Dad I want to build a Model.
Dad my Boyfriend/Girlfriend/non Gender Specific Humanoid is coming over.
Dad I'm joining a Cult.
Dad I'm getting Married.
Dad I'm getting Divorced.
Dad You're going to be a Grand Father.
etc ...

Pick something that literally falls together so she gets a good impression of the Hobby. Bad kits and impressions can come later.

We went through something like this with our kids about 20 years ago when we were on holidays once. The only kits to hand at the time were Zengdefu and their fit was appalling so the kids were a fair bit disheartened by the results and put off for well just about forever. More recently the Boy (well 8 years ago now and he's now grown up) built the new Airfix Sabre and loved it as it went together fairly easily.

An example of such a choice now would be the old Airfix Hawker Typhoon compared with the new one - like Jack used to say "Chalk and Cheese" - give then the new one so they get a good impression. After all if the competition these days is Gaming you wouldn't give a kid the old Ping Pong game we used to play on old tube TVs when there are so many modern Gaming choices available would you?
