I would like to build a KC-30

Postby DesTROYer » Fri Jun 22, 2018 9:24 am

I realaise to do this I will need to build an Airbus A330, but with the Revel kits being a great price that won’t be so bad. Does anyone know of a 1/144 conversion kit to build a RAAF KC-30? Is the A330-300 with a replacement A330-200 resin tailthe correct kit, or are there more changes required, or a better 1/144 kit?

Troy,

There was a conversion Ryan Hamilton (Hamilton Hobbies) did about 10 years ago now, Long OOP. This included GE engines, modified tail, aerial boom parts, drogue pod parts and a few ECM blisters and antennas.

On top of all that the kit needs to be shorted to an A330-200 (you can find instructions to do this on various forums for the location of cuts and how much to remove), the tail of the -200 is taller and broader in chord (so that is why a replacement is in the HH conversion) and needs modifying or replacing.

The other issue is decals, there has only been one set released which was through Southern Sky models (the sheet was maser by Ronin), again released around the same time as the conversion set. This set was limited to the general aircraft markings and none of the underside refuelling alignment makings was included.

Some pictures of my stalled conversion.

Fuselage mods
This was my first attempt, I was going to do a QANTAS A330-200 initially, I trashed this one and started afresh a few years later

Boom and drogue parts (there were 2 versions, left boom and drogues are the later versions, the right side was the original release

The Revell kit is your only reasonable choice in plastic some boxings come with GE engines as well as the P&W's, you can get the resin Authentic Airliners one, which is currently unavailable and quite expensive, but still only an airliner, a lot to do to make a KC-30A

I have a set of walkaround photos, if you need any references

Thank you Ray and Graeme. I picked up a A330-300 kit on eBay this morning for only $23.00 delivered thinking that if I couldn’t do the conversion from that, I could alway turn it into a Qantas bird. I have found a tail conversion for the 300 to 200, so I’m on the right track. You’ve both been a great help.

No problems Troy, happy to help. You might find a conversion set floating around on eBay occasionally.

Good price you got the A330 for, which boxing? Is it the Thai airways one? That one will need aftermarket engines.

Are you sure that is the kit or just a decal?

EDIT :

Wasn't this was it?
