Which blue?

Postby Cap'n Wannabe » Fri Aug 18, 2017 4:45 pm

Is there an "exact" match for the blue used by TAA? As in, straight out of the bottle (or tin)? Or do I need to mix colours? Likewise the red..

To put it in context, I need to paint the tailfin and stripes on my Piper Aztec..

I heard avgas and a naked flame is an exact match for an Aztec. Won't help ya with the blue but it'll give you the correct red glow

The Plans you got back off that nasty man has the colour call outs in the top RH Corner and calls it Dulux 388-14824 Zenith Blue, your only problem now is to translate that into a model paint colour.
I'm wondering what you plan on for the decals, because any paint would have to match the decals, and not anything else.

I am planning a road trip to Brisbane and back starting on Tuesday, so it's remotely possible that I could swing by the QAM and ask what they used on their restoration, although it's not an ex TAA Aztec, it is painted as one.

Good point, Graeme....I never noticed that! If you get the chance, I'd appreciate the information.

As far as the decals go, I'm in the process of drawing them up. Hopefully the blue that prints will be the right one. And the red..

Follow up post...
Does anyone have a decent colour scan of the Sunbird Services logo for the tail?

Don't want to consider using Hawkeye decals?, maybe a bit of research would help
they have
DHC3 Otter CDS-030
PBY Catalina CDS-028
and DC3 CDS-207

Those plans say it's a 16"circle, maybe the 1/144 PBY Catalina might go close

Finding good close up images is difficult in that most aren't square on or even good quality given the time period and cameras of the day
Aussie Airliners is probably your best search area, found this of an DHC-3 Otter, not bad, not good either
http://www.aussieairliners.org/dhc-3/vh ... 0.013.html

and don't forget TAA was an early Twin Otter customer, found these on the Twin Otter site
http://twinotterarchive.com/DHC-6_6.html#VHTGR_1967
http://twinotterarchive.com/DHC-6_8.html#VHTGS_unk

Late Edit
Who did the Cessna 185 TAA Sunbird decals for the odd scale (old Monogram kit) and in 1/72 for the KeeKha kit, that would almost give you everything you need
was it one of those very limited Ronin decals from Roy at Southern Sky?

I have built one example of each of the TAA Sunbird Services aircraft including the Aztec which was converted from an Apache. The colour scheme was based on the drawings kindly supplied by Damian some time ago. The TAA Sunbird collection is now in the TAA Museum at Essendon.
