Posted without comment, as I know the driver and I'm pretty sure he has a better pair of hands than I have.

What was the crosswind and the limit of this particular aircraft?..

There is a video as well. The tyre blows just at the end.

Dunno the lims, Stu.
Wind was gusty, though I understand within acceptable limits on departure.
Not knowing how much endurance he had on board, he may have had no choice but to put it on in WOL.

I heard from blokes that were there that a huge gust got him.

Ouch!
Could have been much worse though. Given the conditions, I reckon he did pretty well. Trappett must have some pretty good sponsors to be able to operate his Sabre and Mustang!

Shite happens huh.

No anti skid, high approach speed, the use of canopy open for drag, small fin/rudder, gusty strong x wind conditions.. Would have been a real challenge.

Stu...further to your xwind question...

F86E Sabre:
Xwind limit dry RWY 28kts.
Similar airframe.

Apparently when he departed the x-wind was within limits.
However, upon return who can tell when the sock is at max extension if it's 25 or 45?
Plus the AWIS is about as much use as a Mars bar in a knife fight when you're just coming off an air display in a turbulent westerly off the escarpment at WOL.
By all accounts of those that were there and knew the conditions: he did a good job.

The F-18 has a requirement to land it solid, so as to force it into ground logic: So the lads reduce drift by about half and just 'put it on'. Otherwise if the jet is still in air logic, due to a finessed zero-drift touchdown, it has enough roll control to flick it on its back ASAP. Such is the nature of FBW. That's a bad look at 0.5 feet in the taxpayers fighter-bomber.

Further to my last,
CAC27 Flight Manual says 25kts X-wind max.

Ok, no worries mate..Few guys from Virgin were there and saw it as well. Sounds like he did well all things considered.
