It's these "critical" times that can make the difference between surviving and not. Many years ago, I worked on a project at a paint plant. The steel structure was sprayed with a concrete like substance. Me being curious asked what it was. It was of course a heat retardant to protect the steel in the event of a fire. I was told it is there to maintain integrity of the structure during a out of control fire for up to 1 hour. Sadly, I knew this statistic when the Twin Towers were hit and I forewarned friends and family of a potential terrible outcome if the fire could not be contained within 1 hour - before the Twins collapsed that night. This kind of haunts me knowing that many if not all of those super brave fireys knew exactly this time frame they had in which to contain/control those fires.

It sure highlights that even though flying is safer than ever, one should never be complacent. I found this link out of interest to learn what is involved in a typical airliner engine fire suppression system. I'm a "systems" guy so am interested in learning about this stuff. I thought there may be some way of applying a inert "blanket" in the fuel tanks themselves, but this just must be too complicated or the chances so small of a wing explosion to make developing such a system unnecessary? Seeing a wing pretty well fully engulfed in flames would make me think it was only a few seconds away from exploding. Perhaps they are designed to fail a certain way - rupture disks for example in the fuel tanks that blow when over-pressure is experienced, thus reducing chance of structural/catastrophic failure? I guess I'm interested in the whole wing/fuel tank design that allows for a "controlled rate of failure". Anyone know anything about this - Uncle Julio?

You are dam right Capt.....it's not a pissing contest. As impressive as all your credentials are, that's not what this is about. Conversely, I could sit here and bore you stupid with all my credentials, and indeed I could more than justify what qualifies me to make the above observations and statements.......you know what I do for a living, (and have done for the last two decades), but this is not about me either.
What this is fundamentally about is an AIRCRAFT ON FIRE and, for some reason, not being evacuated FULL STOP!!! :shock: . And as you would know....24 hours later the whole industry is now asking the same question.
Now we could sit here and argue all night "who has the biggest schlong" but there is no getting away from the fact that this was the risk.....

Sterile Flight Deck conditions aside, I am sure SQ, like everyone else, would have a very specific procedure for this particular scenario, (in fact I know they do cause I was talking to one of their Instructors today).
As said....if that was your house or car being engulfed to that extent would you have stayed in it?????.

So what's your point Ray?.. Your telling me stuff I already know... And have discussed most of the day in CRM..with CRM facilitators and check captains I greatly respect..

I would have thought the arbitrary point was patently obvious Capt.....AIRCRAFT ON FIRE....evacuate the f@#king thing NOW !!!. And are you sure this is not a pissing contest??? cause it is sure as hell starting to feel like one :lol: .....just like old times hey???

SOOOOOOO I'll add a bit to this 'pissing' contest (cos who doesn't love a good pissing contest eh 8-) 8-) 8-) ). I've been a LAME for over 20yrs blah blah blah. That's enough of that crap :roll: As a bum on a seat in that aircraft, I couldn't give a toss if the dude up the front has been to the moon and back doing a 1 handed hand stand talking the to the Almighty Himself. All I want him to do is pull his finger out and get me off that BURNING aircraft. He needs to open his emergency picture book very, very quickly, look for the page that's got fire on it and make everyone do what the little people are doing in the book.The safest place to be with an aircraft on fire is NOT ON IT! It's that simple. It seems like common sense to me but ya know what they say about common sense :o :o :o I'd rather not be cooked in a long aluminium tube if ya don't mind. In this situation the number of people you've spoken to, meetings you've been to or or companies you've rubbed shoulders with count for nada, zilch, zip. Now, I myself will probably be in PNG when the report comes out rubbing shoulders no one in particular with just my boss and a couple of Papuan engineers in attendance. I hope to learn more about fixing choppers while I'm there. If not then I'll just download more pics of cool aggressors to build. As those that know me will attest to, any offense taken will require a cup of cement to be taken orally by the offendee's. I'm not old enough for the 2 bob stuff so that's my 2.2c worth :D :D :D :D :D :D
