My Boeing 707 project

Postby F-27pax » Mon Jun 13, 2016 9:17 pm

Here we see the beginnings of another modelling project, this time a number of Boeing 707s. If I stick to the plan, and I will this time, there will be seven in all. Here are the first three, all from the Roden Boeing 720 kit. The one in the middle will end up being a Brannif International 720 - I haven't decided yet whether it will be orange or blue.). The other two will be QEA 707-138s, the straight -138 and the later -138B. I have yet to start work on a standard 707-120 which is made possible by using the fuselage sections cut from the -138s to lengthen the 720 fuselage to the appropriate length. Then we will move on to the less delectable Minicraft kits.

I am bringing this up now just to remind TOR that, while were chatting today he said that he might have so information on what the upper wing surfaces of the -138 and -138B looked like. If anyone else can help Id appreciate it, photos of upper wing surfaces are not all thet common.

Great project Leigh!!! :D, (I am sure I can talk you into doing more than just 7 707s...after all there are just so many great schemes, why limit yourself :D ).
As promised, please see what I have dug-up for you so far.
Note that the Qantas 707-138B in these photos feature the very short-lived "interim" colour scheme that appeared between the original 707-138 delivery colours and the first of the V-jet schemes. However the upper wing details seemed to remain pretty constant.
Note also that the over-wing exit directional escape arrows was not yet a requirement when these photos were taken.

With the HUGE bias that exists with the site owner in regard to 7Ohs, I can see Leigh getting the "Attaboy best A/CAM modeller of the month award" for this! :D

Great start to this project Leigh - missed seeing you at Expo. Wanted to chat about Lightnings with you!

Cheers

Yeah.....I must admit to a "little" bit of bias and favouritism where the big, graceful, beautiful, majestic, sleek, fast, kick-arse 707 is concerned. She truly is the original "Queen of the skies".
I mean....can you get any better looking than this ???. She is perfectly symmetrical and in proportion.

She really is the perfect aeroplane :D .

Agreed - best looking airliner (subsonic category). Should have frozen the design right there I reckon! :D

Thanks for the photos TOR, I'm not sure that I wanted to see anything so complicated. Besides, I can't work out what all the colours and shades are. Around the wing root it seems to be your standard Boeing grey, but I don't know about the rest of the wing which seems to be another shade of grey, or perhaps some darker metal. Does anyone have any suggestions, this is driving me bonkers.

On general aesthetics I think I prefer the DC-8 to the 707. It looks even sleeker, especially the later model ones. And the Convair 990 looks even faster which, I guess, it was.
