I've read a few of Bach's books. He's a amazing writer and perhaps the best in being able to describe what it is to fly. A couple of his later books get a bit mushy - a bit too lovey dovey romantic stuff (insert Emoticon with little dude putting finger down throat here!) . His own story is amazing. He was at one time a USAF/Reserves fighter pilot flying I think Sabres and then F-84's. His book "Stranger to the Ground" is one of my all time fav books. Then he writes Jonathan Livingstone Seagull and makes a fortune! He ends up buying a hangar full of aeroplanes and then his accountant swindled him and he lost the lot. He's got a couple of other nice books, one called "Biplane" about flying cross country in a 1929 Detroit-Ryan Speedster Parks P-2A.

This damned topic drift has got me wanting to fly a bip again - argh!

I have never met an aviation tragic that couldn't put it down.

I have lent the book many times...had to buy new copies twice to replace the non-boomerangs!

(For the rotor-heads..."chickenhawk" by Robert Mason).

Yep, read 'em - tremendous reads both. I too lost my Fate is the Hunter book - goddamn it! Brilliant book and essential reading for anyone who flies I think.

If you're into anything from the Vietnam war period, two great writers are:

"Cheating Death" by George Marrett is incredible - all about his time flying A-1's over Laos and Nth Vietnam.

Ed Rasimus has two great books, "When Thunder Rolled" about his time flying the 105 and "Palace Cobra" when he later ditched his wife and went back to S.E.Asia flying the Double Ugly. He also helped put together Robin Olds memoirs - another tremendous read. Olds to me is the all time greatest fighter pilot having flown in WW2 and over the hell that was Route Pack 6. Both Olds and Rasimus have passed on.

"The Wrong Stuff" by CDR. John Moore Ret. is a great read. He flew in Korea, became a naval test pilot and then worked for North American right until the Apollo 1 pad fire.
