1/48 RAF F-86 Sabre

A place for our military aviation modellers to show their stuff. It may not be civil but it still has a home here

Thanks boys. I'll show him after I get home from picking him up tonight. Wayne I haven't sorted a base yet but I'm not in a rush any more. Decided to take my time and get it done right :) :) :)

Looks great, Paul! Base44 has some good stuff if you're in Melbourne.

As it happens I am putting a few stands together. In the interests of most efficiently utilising the volume within my display cases I want to put a few of my larger models on stands, I could find bugger all at prices I was prepared to pay so I made my own for my Stratocruiser and pleased with the results I have just put some sanding sealer on them. I am like you, I don't have the tools or expertise to work in "regular" wood so I fabricate mine out that craft board stuff (made in various shapes available at Bunnings) and balsa and Brass rectangular tubing.

In the picture the larger stand is for my EC135, the model is too big to fit in the cabinet but I want it off the shelf collecting dust, this stand is made from a base board bought from bunnings for the base and laminated craft board with the brass tubing embedded between the laminates, the brass tube fulfills two functions:
Provides strength and rigidity to the stand arm and slots into a larger brass tube glued into the interior of the model. This stand enables the C-135 to be displayed (just) in the cabinet in a 30 degree bank.

The smaller stand is craft board base with a balsa top and the stand arm is again craft board laminate with brass tube within. After sanding I paint these black, I don't really enjoy making these, I resent the time it takes but it is actually not that bad when you have decided upon your design and method.

I'm calling this done and I'm pretty happy with it. Dad has seen the model but not all finished on the stand. I'll pack it up in the next few days and post it to Hervey Bay :)
