The ultimate NASA combinations - anyone got these kits out of interest? X-15 would be a difficult one to present in the Civvie category at Expo I reckon, as it was largely military funded, 50% flown by military pilots (expect the NASA pilots such as Armstrong, Thompson, McKay, Walker, Dana and NAA test pilot Crossfield). X-15 as well as having the NASA symbology, also sports the "Stars & Bars", so a hybrid civil/military program. Shuttle purely civil - except when chartered to launch classified satellites for the US military. Love to see one of you airliner builders have a crack at either of these anyway!

My two future NASA builds are these:

"013" - the one Joe Walker tragically perished in when he rolled into the XB-70

Being a huge fan of the "Bull" I want to build X-15A-1 66670 that did the high altitude profiles in which Joe Walker captured the unofficial altitude record of 354,200 feet. I have the 1/48 Special Hobbies kit plus the Supersonic conversion set to change the X-15A-2 to a X-15A-1.

ARGH -missed it! I gave up Pay TV some time ago. Just ended up watching too much telly since I was paying for it. Being the "Anal retentive" type that I am, it used to annoy the crap out of me when watching say a Nat Geo or History channel doco and they would use totally incorrect footage at times - pull out "stock" footage which you know is wrong for the time period, or even totally the wrong geographic location. Yes, indeed this is a character flaw of mine in that a little knowledge ends up ruining a TV watching experience! Issue now I'd have is the kids watching it all the time and they watch too much as it is, so no Pay TV for me!

Saying that though, some time ago there was a brilliant series on SBS covering Mercury through to Apollo with footage I'd never seen before. Got it recorded on the TV. I also bought a multi-DVD set covering all the NASA X-15 footage awhile ago. It's amazing stuff to watch the "Bull" being launched (well, dropped like a 14 ton bomb!) until the XLR-99 kicks in and accelerates this beast up to those lofty heights it reached. It sure must have been a extraordinary ride. Not sure if you've ever read about the Mike Adams accident with X-15A-3? Mike re-entered the atmosphere sideways due to a instrument issue (and possible vertigo issues) and got the Bull into a hypersonic spin. It eventually got pointed in the right direction, but by this time he'd lost the pitch dampers and the Bull got into a nasty oscillatiuon peaking at something like +/- 20 G and this killed him - the only fatality during this extraordinary program. X-15 still has the record for fastest winged aeroplane @ Mach 6.7 - what a machine.

I have the earlier releases of the Revell 1:144 747-100 SCA/Shuttle kit, but I would LOVE the B-52/X-15 combo. I wonder what scale it is??? I reckon you would be pushing the proverbial uphill trying to get the B-52/X-15 into the Civil category as both aircraft retained their military serials and identity.

Hmm - pretty sure Monogram did a 1/72 B-52 tall tail didn't they? They def did a 1/72 X-15 because I have one - want it? Agreed with the NASA "Bull & Buff" combo with the Civvie cat - heavily funded by the military this program and both retain the Stars & Bars.

Lemme know if you want this "little" Bull as it's surplus to requirements.

Yeah Adam, just found one on Evilbay....it is 1:72. Thanks for the offer of the X-15 mate, but I wanna see if I can get this combo on Ebay first.
