I was up at Bathurst last week for work. I did get a chance to do a couple of laps in the hired XR6 (under the speed limit of course!) at Mt Panorama. For those that haven't had the opportunity to do this it really is amazing. It is quite a climb up the mountain and coming down is even more fun! Going through the "Dipper" even on the speed limit is very cool - I've no idea how the pro's do it with the foot hard down on the loud pedal! The view from the top of the mountain is spectacular and I do understand why the racers do not look left when flying across Skyline!
I visited the museum at the track as well and this is highly recommended for any self-respecting petrol head (of which I understand there are a couple who frequent A/CAM!). I'll post some pic's soon of my Mt Panorama visit.

Us Holden supporters are still reeling form the news that after the current VF Commodore runs it's course, there will be no more V8 Commodores,(despite what off-shore platform the Commodore name plate will go on in the future).
I have a sneaky suspicion however that Holden, not wishing to hand the performance car sector of the local market to Ford with their mighty Mustang, will make an announcement in the near future. And I suspect (hope) that announcement will centre around the imported RH Drive, 6.2ltr V8 Camaro wearing Holden/HSV badges , (already laid my money down ).

We had it real good for a long time. Pity Aussies stopped buying Aussie cars - it was down to 10-12% I believe. When is the last year I wonder Falcon's and Commodores will be racing at Bathurst?

Surely GMH will bring the Camaro out to Australia - it would be madness not to! I want Chrysler to bring out the Challenger!!! It would somewhat soften the blow of no more local manufacture of big Aussie V8's to see Mustangs and Camaro's duke it out around Mt Panorama. There surely is no way GMH is stepping away from racing - surely not! Ford Australia did that when dropping the V8 and that did them wonders - NOT! Win races - sell cars - simple! Well, it works for a simple bonehead like me anyway!

TOR that seems less likely at the moment we are more likely to get the corvette it seems,the current camaro(that was productionised here) isnt going to be built in RHD format.

though i was down at the local holden dealer on saturday.....and i LIKE the new insgnia....turbo V6 power and all wheel drive NICE.

Aussie built cars are of great quality,but letting all these cheap import brands in has killed them...we have something in excess of 60 brands of cars trying to compete for around 1 million sales...between that and our wonderful government selling us down the toilet for a free trade agreement with china,they were doomed

If by chance the Camaro doesn't come to Oz, then it will be the Chrysler Challenger for me. Personally though, I think GMH playing down the likelihood of the RHD Camaro being bought to Australia is all part of the marketing strategy of "surprise and delight", just like when they said they would not put into production the VT Coup concept car once it was unveiled at the Sydney Motor Show, and then BAM!!!! the CV8 Monaro is announced. Anyway, I guess time will tell.

OMG - that Challenger is seriously to die for!

Perhaps a little off topic but not too much. In 1949 my Mum and Dad went on a holiday to Bathurst and took a bus trip around the Mount Panorama circuit. This is 1949 remember. The coach driver told the passengers that even in those days the drivers (driving things like highly modified FX Holdens, even more highly modified Austin A40s etc) would be doing 90 mph down through the Esses with a little more than half throttle. BTW the FXs and Austins had highly modified Holden engines with Caine twin OHC cross flow heads on fairly standard blocks with triple dual throat carbs and extractor exhausts and these mods along with ignition timing changes more than quadrupled the output from 60 bhp to 250 bhp. Imagine a 2.15 litre straight six engine pushing out as much as my Adventra does from a 3.6 litre V6 at similar rpm without any of the electronic trickery and whizzbangery of a modern engine. All purely mechanically achieved and without even so much as magnetos, just a slightly modified points type distributor. I once saw one of these engines cutaway and I was amazed at what can be achieved with a little thought and imagination.

I think you'd love the Bathurst museum Ross. I'll add some pic's real soon - keep watching this station for further updates! I've driven around the circuit a couple of times now - I make an effort to do so every time I visit Bathurst for work, in supreme respect to those you go foot to the floor on the loud pedal. I truly am completely in awe of those who do so around Mt Panorama.

You Paul are the ultimate Bathurst enthusiast! You're certainly the only person I've ever met with ownership to actual Bathurst history! I love watching the old classics race around Bathurst - and other races when they do - the "Touring Car Masters". Watching ol' beasts like XY GTs (no doubt brought up to GTHO spec), Camaros, Mustangs, XB GTs, Toranas and even Chargers! Now this is racing gentlemen!
