The Russkies are here!

Postby Adam the Akrodude » Fri Apr 25, 2014 10:17 am

Well, they were back in 1988 for the Bicentennial Airshow! Here's some photos I took of some Russkie gear on show here in Australia over the years. I missed seeing the mighty Su-27 back in 1995 at Avalon - was on a job in China at the time

Think this MiG-15UTI is a Polish built machine.

Nick Costan's Su-29 at PCK - aerobatics comp years ago.

Hans Litjen's Yak-50 (since sold to USA) fitted with 400HP M-14 engine - one of the most sensational aerobatic aeroplanes to watch, as it's quite big and has a amazing presence and sound. This was possibly the last Yak-50 competing in Advanced aerobatics in the world (according to Mark Jefferies in the UK).

I saw an aerobatic demonstration routine done by the Russian aerobatic world champ Victor Chmal flying a Sukhoi-26 at Farnborough back in the '90's.
I have never come so close to believing a man was going to die right before my eyes, then hey...he saved himself at the last moment.
After the close of the show, post 4pm...there he was again...unannounced. Practicing his routine.
Amazing.

Absolutely amazing and infamous handling demo, I was there at Richmond that afternoon and I will NEVER forget it  . Talk about defying the Gods of aviation.

Yeah Ray - I was there in '88 also (as a spritely 20 y.o. with hair and a bright future), I vividly remember the Ruslan demo, and when I saw it go past the vertical I started to run fearing a BIG crash was imminent coz he wasn't that high! :o  :o
How it didn't is still a mystery to me to this day... :? :? :?

Ruslan driver was damn lucky it didn't all go pear-shaped like Fairchild Air Force Base B-52.
Now that was ugly. From 0:48 seconds on they're all dead men flying...in fact we use the commander as an example of poor CRM.
He was "a little out there".
Off topic, I know.
