Refurb'ing a Fw-190 - recommendations for stripping paint.

Postby Adam the Akrodude » Sat Jul 25, 2015 4:09 pm

Checking out the back corner of my model cabinet I found a old Tamiya 1/48 Fw-190A3 in dire need of a re-furb. I intend to strip off the paint and start afresh. I have actually been meaning to do this for sometime, but the time has come as I want to use it as a refresher course at doing Luftwaffe mottle in RLM 74/75. I do have a fondness for the round nose 190's and this was quite a good little kit to build.
So, the intention is not to do a complete strip and rebuild of all parts so a caustic bath is out. Will spraying oven cleaner on the fuselage and wings be enough? I did paint this in Humbrol enamels - why I do not know, because I find acrylics far superior. It was a lazy brain fart 19-20 years ago when I built this.
I do not want to loose the cockpit paint job, as this will just add many hours to the refurb. So, what should I try - spray on oven cleaner (if so what brand is good), or something like brake fluid (another technique I've read about). Over to you guys - what should I try?

Cheers in advance

This works......

http://www.micromark.com/easy-lift-off- ... ,7270.html

available from some LHS's in Melbourne. Brunel......

http://www.brunelhobbies.com.au/ModelMa ... master.htm

Also possibly from Hearns but their crap web site doesn't mention it.

Probably a banned substance for importing yourself.

I thought this was a forum about airliners and civil aircraft. :!:

Michael
As many techniques have equal applicability across the entire modelling spectrum, (regardless of the subject matter), I have no problem with these sorts of requests for advice/assistance. We can all learn new "tricks of the trade" with this sort of post.
You may also note that we do in fact embrace our military aviation modellers by virtue of the "Air Base" forum.

Thanks Ed - I'll give that stuff a go. I can't use Ray's caustic bath technique as I want to keep the model intact and do not want the cockpit ruined as happened with Damo recently with his Corsair. I'll have a bit of a experiment and report back.

@Michael. It's great to have feedback. Some A/CAM'ers are strictly airliner/civvie builders and some build a mix here. I'm obviously in the later group. I like the challenge of both as they require quite different painting/finishing skills and techniques. I'm very much still learning and refining my "civvie" skills - getting the right techniques down for high gloss finishes. A/CAM is a unique modelling forum and a lot of thought went into the development with Ray doing his "market research" to determine what we punters want. It was determined that there is a need for a "military" aircraft section in the forum for those of us who build these sort of models to post our work. The forum may have been just too specialised and thus not attract as many members had it been purely limited to civvie modelling alone.
Would you prefer anything associated with military builds located down at the Airbase? I've no issue whatsoever moving any of my "military" build posts down there. This certainly is the place to post any finished military builds. Obviously the main emphasis of this forum is airliner/civvie aircraft modelling.
For the last two years I've only built two little aerobatic aeroplane models with a 3rd 80% finished. I've actually experienced withdrawal symptoms from being too long away from both 1/32 and military builds, so perhaps I have come across being a little too over-enthusiastic - apologies if that is so. It is very important that A/CAM be a fun place to visit, to enjoy and learn from. So, please let us know if there are any changes you would like to see and I'm sure the owner and we moderators can take any feedback on-board and make any changes deemed necessary to improve the A/CAM experience.

Cheers

I've got a bloody suggestion. From now on, ban anyone that says that military stuff looks better in civvie paintjobs. That includes that bloody site owner

Gee that FW190 would look far better in a nice civvie Red Bull racing scheme, (I would use a smiley emoticon here, but someone else has used up the site quota for the month).
