Cessna 180 open engine bay

Hi guys,
I am just pottering with a little, old Monogram 1:41 Cessna 180, (waiting for the decal sheets to arrive for my 707 Tankers), and, despite the age of the kit, it has quiet a nicely-detailed little engine. I wouldn't mind showing it off by having the engine bay open, but I can't seem to find any descent reference shots of a Cessna 180 open engine bay. Could any one point me in the right direction, or at least advise on colours etc.

The firewall would be either aluminium, light grey, or interior green. Likewise, the inside surface of the cowl would be the same. Engine block would generally be a darker grey, with the cylinders black (drybrushed with silver..) and the heads a blue/grey. Most of the other stuff would be black as well. HTH

I think Andrew did an Aussie Army version of this kit. I am just trolling through his AMI images now to see if there is an engine bay shot.

It's a Continental O-470 (470 cu. inch) - decent sized engine. Google is your friend. Note cylinder end caps can be different colours - all depends what shop may have refurb'd the engine I guess. I'd paint it in that "vomity" silver colour and use a sludge wash to bring out detail. Mix a tiny bit of Khaki with silver for the colour - oils like raw umber & panes grey for the sludge mix (with turps).

That is awesomely Sierra Hotel Adam!!! and exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.
When doing a pre-flight or inspection.....does the engine cowl just open and somehow pop up, or does the whole cowl have to come off??

Cowl flaps would be cable operated and no the whole cowl doesn't come off for a preflight. Only for a 100 hourly would it come off. Besides you couldn't trust pilots to put it back on properly :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Probably only take the cowl off when changing the oil. We're allowed to do that, you know, Paul! :lol: :lol:

I wouldn't think so as the sump plug is usually lockwired and you ain't allowed to lockwire 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
