A good warplane, in my opinion, is one that you can look at and think - "Yep, that's gonna ruin someones day!"

That's why I love the big, bad, BUFF!!!. Why take-out targets when you can take out countries....and do it with eight black smoke trails :D

Great clip Tor - just as well there weren't a few more - zero visibility take off at 15 second intervals in a BUFF - imagine the pucker factor!

When it comes to critiquing the 35 both in looks and performance, I'd like to quote from one of the greatest movie USAF General's ever - Gen, "Buck" Turgidson from Dr. Strangelove.

Image

"I think I'd like to hold off judgment on a thing like that, sir, until all the facts are in...I don't think it's quite fair to condemn the whole program because of a single slip up, sir."

Admittedly the 35 is a strange looking flying beast, but to me there is just something about the "fluidity" of it's shaping giving it an almost animal like appearance from certain angles.

You can read GAO reports on the 35 or listen to what the pilots themselves are saying about the 35 - I choose the later.

I just don't get all this criticism before "all the facts are in".

Ray, no doubt you've watched Dr. Strangelove several times...

General "Buck" Turgidson: If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!

You don't need facts to critisize the looks of it Adam. There's plenty of pics around. And IMHO it looks wrong and no amount of "facts" is gonna change my mind. As for animal like appearance, maybe if you crossed a hippo with squirrel. A Squirapotamus if you will

Hey Paul

Here's a choice fact for ya - see that last pic with that gigantic torch coming out the back end? That's 43,000Ib of thrust - generating "The sound of freedom"! The 35 is a 105 on shite loads of steroids! Pushing that go lever forward must be such a rush.

The poor old F-4 can't match that thrust with two engines - oh dear 8-)

I do have to accept though that you love an aeroplane that looks like it was designed and built by a blacksmith with bits bent up and down at weird arse angles (admittedly a awesome smokin' death wielding machine of war when flown by legends such a Col. Robin Olds and many others!)

So let me see if I understand this.....that butt-ugly thing called a F-35 has just ONE engine. Nahhhh give me a big Buff with EIGHT engines any day. And who needs stealth....you want the bad guys to know you are coming and what their cause of death will be :D, and eight howling TF33s belching big, black, 20 mile-long smoke trails will certainly do that :D
TOR
PS: Still I guess an F-35 escort for my B-52 wouldn't be a bad thing :D

Jeez, some of you guys are hard to please. What's with you multi-engine types - nah not enough engines, not enough bombs!

This photo does convey a certain something. There are some foxholes you can't dig deep enough, nor find caves or bunkers deep enough when a BUFF comes a huntin'. Still plenty of life in those ol' BUFFs!
