Displaying models on forums

Postby F-27pax » Thu Oct 28, 2021 1:50 pm

Okay, so it may be that forums are the Dodo of the internet world. However, I am now old and grumpy enough to have a lot of sympathy for Dodos and I've decided that I prefer forums to facebook. So I've put my money where my mouth is and paid the Postimage premium, and normal service will be resumed shortly, depending on what happens.

In the meantime. I've been giving as much thought as my poor old, tired and set-in-its-ways brain can handle to the business of how best to display models on the inter web. There are a couple of problems, well, three actually if you include making models that are good enough to photograph. One is the problem of giving models a human scale. Many solve this with dioramas but they are more difficult for aircraft than for vehicles and, in any event, I am not a diorama kind of guy. The other is how to indicate scale relationships because showing a model by itself, or even in a diorama, gives no indication of its scale relationship to the outside world. Having given these matters a little thought I tried some experiments which are based on my experience working in an aviation museum and studying them enough to have a bit of paper to hang on my wall to indicate that I have a slight idea about the subject.

Any comments are welcomed. I particularly like the photos of the AMX10 and the Air France A.321. The photo of the SAAB shows that I still need to do some work on my basic modelling skills.

I do like adding the human element and painting figures I find quite a challenge and one I want to improve on. I do want to purchase some background boards for my 1/48 "Luftwaffes" in particular. Figures I find look best in 1/32, so unfortunately the subject aircraft are large.
Still, you can play around with perspective - larger figure/scale in foreground with model behind. Stop the lens right down to high F numbers (small aperture) to give more depth of field.

L'le "Jack Broughton" climbing into the F-105D was a challenge as the figure was originally seated, so turning him into a ladder climbing figure involved a lot of surgery, but it was fun at the time.

L'le "Heinz Sashsenberg" was a lot easier as no surgery was required - just the difficulty of attempting to make his face look human which is the tough part in 1/32 and above. Image12240239_163758070644288_3877840148702086611_o by Adam Dormer, on Flickr

So adding figures is enjoyable, but a challenge. I'm going to have a crack at doing 1/48 figures - the plan is with either the Cessna A-37A and A-26K projects - when I start them!

I agree, adding a figure or two gives an aeroplane model a sense of proportion. I saw grey painted figures in a museum once (may have been the Museum of Flight) which gave that sense of proportion without distracting the viewer from the aeroplane. Also, I'm appalling when it comes to figure painting and I wouldn't even try it in 1/144. Nice looking models too, thanks for showing them.

"Jack" climbing up the ladder of the F-105 in particular shows how huge that jet is. The toughest thing in figure painting is getting the eyes right and not giving the figure that "1000 yards stare"!
