This Boeing E-4B Airborne Command Post can coordinate and execute the launch of the entire US nuclear arsenal
It can stay airborne indefinitely with the aid of aerial refuelling, and is hardened against nuclear detonation-induced EMP.
In an all-out global nuclear exchange this will probably be the last jet flying, (in fact it will probably be the last recognisable remnant of human civilisation and technology) .
It's not called the "Doomsday" jet for nothing.

Nice photos of both aircraft Ray, one small problem I see is they ain't going to stay up above the radio active clouds forever as they must run out of tankers at some time.
Got to come down at some time and croak like the rest of us, at least the ones caught on the ground will miss out on funeral costs as one flash and your ash will by pass the cremation costs.

Indeed you are correct Wayne.....but the limiting factor will be engine oils more so than fuel. While the E-4 can refuel inflight there is no way to replenish the engine oils. So eventual she will fall from the radio-active sky as (very heavy) Boeing "rain"

It's not something we'd want to see these "horsemen of the apocalypse" launch - particularly on a bad news day! I'd not be surprised if they do in fact have reserve oil tanks for engine oil - to prolong time in-flight. Even the ol' A-1 "SPAD" could be fitted with a reserve oil tank for its "Sandblower" nuke missions. The limiting factor with the ol' SPAD was of course oil consumption - up to 6 US Gals/hr and the oil tank only held 36 US Gals - hence max 6 hour mission. So, a reserve oil tank for missions going up to 14 hours could be fitted. Imagine hauling a single nuke flying around at dot feet doing maybe 120kts in cruise for 14 hours! At least the E-4 crews can walk around, get a coffee and a donut during WW3! A SPAD I very much doubt would have survived the blast from a nuke it dropped.

I often correspond with a guy who at one time was a F-105 pilot and stood alert at times with two nukes on board - waiting for that order to launch which thankfully never came. Even flying that loft/toss manoeuvre to release the nukes, I doubt he would have survived and made it back to base. That took balls of steel I think.

It's a very rare photo as you can imagine! There are two nukes as well - one under each wing.
