SHIT

well you finish one mustang.......repair another, and all hell breaks through...i'm now in the middle of a mustangathon

Image

with the RB51 finished i thought i';d repair an easy model mustang....was missing gear and canopy.....i had spare airfix canopies so all good........stole the gear from an academy P51.....then thought ...i can use that..........then pulled out and airfix and tamiya P51's....so current plan.....top model Academy kit(it's a little fat but ok)...VH-FCB...would later be the Castrol mustang..and i saw it's last display as "big beautiful doll" at duxford in 2011.....need Black letters

next is the easy model P51...AM-G...the pointcook mustang.....just about done.

then the airfix one will be VH-IVI (just need white letters)

then the Tamiya one will be A68-766...later to be used in Korea...but in late WW11 blue and white roundels.

god knows where it end........i just discovered VH-BVM........the red x trial mustang

well.....it got worse....now there are two P51b's on there as well......that makes 6 in this batch.......and 8 this year so far  :o
Image
the B's will be excalbur 111....the aircraft tha took the New York to London record in 1951...it also flew from Norway to Alaska over the north pole......it is preserved at the NASM in washinton(just need to buy decals)
Image

the other B is in my mind a little more special....it was flown in a US based training squadron based at Bartow Army Airforce base in Florida,it crashed on a routine training flight into a local lake, killing the pilot Dean Gilmore a veteran of F6A missions around italy,he flew 91 mission for a total of 194 combat hours..not really special you might think, but it doesnt end there in 2001 the wreck was rediscovered and recovered,it eventually ended up in the ownership of Jack Roush and was rebuilt to fly.
it currently flies as Old Crow with a Malcolm hood...but her display board makes note of the original plane being Gilmore's plane.
Image

the Great Niece of the pilot posted on one of the US base warbird forums about her "uncle" dean and the recovery of his plane so an interest was switched on,she got to meet Jack roush and has seen a touched the restored plane.i have been wanting to do this plane for quite a while, but the opportunity seemed to have never come up,till this weekend when i was given a bunch of P51's .

Nice collection Paul, I like the variety of the subjects there.

Suppose I should build some of the 3 or so P-51s in the collection... one day
