That's brilliant Ross!

We're getting some track drift from Damo's original post, but 100% sure he won't mind! :D I reckon Damo loves flying more than I - he is a true "stranger to the ground" as Richard Bach once said about himself.

This is the Trojan I went for a ride in years ago. Sadly this is the one that crashed near Launceston just after the air race down there. Classic case of "Rogue pilot".

I got a bit of stick time - pretty heavy beast that just flies along on rails - very different from the little Decathalon I was flying at the time. I felt I'd gone from a little sports car like a MG to driving a truck! Still it was a great experience and I got to fire the big R-1820 at Moorabbin when we flew over there from Point Cook to get some "Go Juice". Canopy open, one finger on the button that turns over the engine, count 9 blades I think it was then hit the button that gives the sparks to the engine - result - huge cloud of white smoke enveloping the open canopy and cockpit, cough, splutter - BRILLIANT! :D

I guess the lesson I learnt from this is to understand as best possible the "head space" the pilot in command - ask his/her experience both overall and current and a statement like - "Hey buddy, no stoopid stuff" can help as well. No one wants to experience what the poor passenger went through in that T-28 or that awful Yak-52 crash off Stradbroke Island.

OK Adam I'll bring the talk back onto topic. What were we discussing again? Oh yes, that's right, model Stearmans (or should that be Stearmen). Here's one for both you and damo.

It even has a working radial engine. Once again taken at Festival of Flight 2008 Watts Bridge.

Hey Ross

Luckily you've joined a forum that embraces thread drift - so long as it's entertaining, fun and I guess in the general vein of the original post. It's a case of the pot calling the kettle black as I am one of the worst offenders here of thread drift - ask anyone! :D
So, please please drift away - your photos are brilliant!

Cheers

Adam

G'day damo. No it isn't based close to me. I think it lives in SE Qld somewhere. Watts Bridge is near Toogoolawah west of Ipswich. It was a RAAF base built during WW2 and then lay dormant until the 1970s when it was reactivated by the water authority to fly in personnel and equipment when they were building the nearby dam. If it or any Stearman turns up at the air show this weekend I'll get some good shots of it including some interior shots.

Looking forward to the pics Ross. If you can, could you get a few snaps inside the cowling between the firewall and the engine? This is the engine panel I mean behind the exhaust Image

Thanks mate :)

Hi Paul. I'll try if a Stearman turns up. Is that a Shaky Jake engine?

Not to sure what engine it is mate. I haven't done top much research just yet. I've got the 1/48 Revell kit and those panels are open so I wanna put a bit of detail in there. Thanks again mate :)
