Quiz Time

Postby scotty100368 » Sun Sep 08, 2024 11:56 pm

Seeing as this forum has been rather quiet of late, here's a quiz to generate some interaction...

1. Before and into WW2, Qantas operated 11 Short Empire Flying Boats (all ex Imperial Airways). They were all christened with names starting with "C". Can you list them all?

2. In the 1960s, TAA had planned to adopt their first jet type, but under the 2 airline policy had to order L-188 Electras to match Ansett's order. What was the type they originally wanted? (would make a great What-If subject)

3. Jetstar commenced operations with which aircraft type?

4. What was Ansett's first revenue service and with what type?

5. Australian National Airlines and KLM were the only two airlines to operate what rare aircraft type?

6. The Airbus A220 series was adopted from which original manufacturer and models?

7. Which 2 airlines were merged to form Rex Airlines?

8. A total of 7 Boeing 707s served with the RAAF from 1979-2008 (29 years). 4 of these were ex Qantas. What airline previously operated the other 3?

9. What year and what country did the first Qantas international route terminate?

10. Reverend John Flynn founded which air service?

Try your luck! :D

Answers on Friday night.

I think this thread could do with a few more questions.

Who was the Australian that navigated for Wiley Post on the round the world flight in 1931 in the Lockheed Vega “Winnie Mae”? The flight took 8 days, 15 hours and 51 minutes. He (along with Wiley Post) received a DFC for this achievement. In 1935, he was hired by Pan Am to help develop their routes across the Pacific. In WWII he was given the honourary rank of Group Captain in the RAAF and was later appointed director of Air Transport for the Allied forces under General Macarthur. In 1947, he founded the airline Katafaga Estates Ltd in Fiji and renamed it Fiji airways in 1951. This went on to become Air Pacific and 1971 and later reverted back to Fiji airways in 2013.

Who was the first woman to fly solo around the world?
What plane did she fly and what was it called?
Where is the plane now?
Who did she "race" to be the first around the world?

A few answers.

Harold Gatty. I had not heard of him until recently and wonder about the numerous aviators whose names and achievements have been forgotten with the passage of time.

Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock flew a Cessna 180 around the world in 1964. The plane was named Spirit of Columbus and now resides in the Thomas W. Haas We All Fly gallery in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.

Her “rival” was Joan Merriam Smith who flew a Piper apache (named City of Long Beach) and followed the route that Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan took in 1937.
