A little side project.

Postby DesTROYer » Thu Mar 09, 2017 7:44 pm

I have been toying with this idea for a while, but this week after a painfully long phone call with a not so smart contractor, I needed a break and decided to spend a little of my time and money on eBay. I've wanted a coffee table display cabinet for a while, but most that I have seen have been either very expensive, or not what I'm looking for. This time however... success... kind of. I found a glass top coffee table the right dimensions and with a nice thick 12 mm glass top, but it had no sides and needed a shelf installed as the depth whilst great for a coffee table was too deep for what I wanted to put in it. $20.50 later, I had won the auction and picked it up last night.

So what I plan to do is, using MDF and some 90º angle brackets, fill in the sides and make a shelf, say 100mm above floor level.

So this weekend I hope to get started on it. I know how I'm going to build it, so all I have left to do now is think about how I'm going to paint it

Spent yesterday in the garage working on this and am happy to say that with only a few hurdles, it's done.

Started by sanding and repainting the frame.

I took my measurements into the Mitre10 near my work on Friday at lunch time and they cut the MDF to size for me and had it ready to pick up on the way home. So then all I had to do was paint them up and screw them in. Or so I thought. I did get one measurement wrong. (Measure twice cut once), lucky it was only a trim that was required, not a new sheet. Around to my mates to use is table saw and it was all fixed.

After a clean up and touch up of the paint work here and there, I let the paint cure over night before moving it into the house and filling it with some models.

There are some very fine scratches in the glass from its use with the previous owner, so after cleaning with spray and wipe, I have put the first of three wiped on coats of future to the glass. Seems to be taking care of them nicely.
