with all the accidents i cant wait for this northern hemisphere season to be over.....

along with Jim Wickham's tyabb accident...a TRIX spitfire had an engine failure in the UK resulting in a forced landing,but substantial damage to the airframe(loss of one wing) but the pilot walked away with no injuries.


and this morning the Reno racer Precious metal had a fuel fire,the pilot and owner is fine but it looks like her racing days are done...luckily she was on the ground but the fire damage sounds pretty bad.

Hugely relieved about Jim Wickham - could have been nasty. Not good about that Spitty crash - brilliant the pilot is OK. Insurance company takes over now and it will be rebuilt.

Thing with engine failures in say light non-aerobatic aeroplanes (little spam cans, etc) with low wing loading, if having some altitude, there is some time to look around for a decent paddock, road, whatever to aim for, picking your high key and key and low key turning points, trying to start the engine, giving out a Mayday call, tightening the harness one last time, deciding whether or not to open door/canopy, etc. In higher performance aeroplanes, there is often bugger all time as the rate of decent can be pretty high. I remember reading about Guido's engine failure in his Sea Fury (as he described his Centaurus became 18 very expensive ash trays!). After loosing oil pressure, the engine seized within seconds and in a few more seconds he was skidding across a paddock.

this is the one that hurts the most.......i was really looking forward to reno this year....all reports were that PM was running stronger than every and hopes were high shge could have push the merlin twins.

Rotten luck about Precious Metal. For the sake of having a decent extinguisher nearby - still that may not have been enough either. It could be rebuilt - all at some cost. It will depend on whether the owner wants to do this or pass the "hull" onto the insurance company. At least it didn't happen in flight!!!

This was incredible and compelling viewing! So glad all on board got out OK. Looks like that left engine really let go in a big way! These are big GE engines aren't they? It will be very interesting reading about this engine failure. What do you reckon that this will be a write off - another insurance claim this week!

Yeah......it was a very good outcome. It is very gratifying to see when a SMS works so effectively. As I understand it the airframe suffered substantial fire damage, and will in all probability be a hull loss.

That's the 2nd BA 777 hull loss, (both attributable to the big GEs). The insurers will NOT be pleased.

PS: the only things that annoys me is dickhead passengers insisting on taking their cabin baggage with them in an evacuation .

You have but 90 seconds to evacuate the jet using slides that a very vulnerable to damage from hand luggage. These morons don't seem to realize that they are putting themselves and everyone at risk by taking their bags.
