A Post Card from Old Warden

Old Warden Race Day, Last Airshow of the Year

Our last week in the UK and viewing the favourable weather forecast I thought I’d take a two and a half hour drive down to Old Warden, home of the Shuttleworth Collection, a fabulous grass airfield in a beautiful country setting.
At last, as the GPS was counting down the last hundred meters to destination, through a break in the typical English hedge, I saw a splash of red fully revealed in the next few seconds to be the absolutely glorious sight of the DH Comet “Grosvenor House”, I almost drove off the narrow road craning around to see a Lysander and Gladiator.. I had to drive another couple of miles to enter the airfield from the other side before I could get amongst these glorious classics.
Fumbling with barely supressed excitement I wrested my cameras from my backpack and started snapping away (another 2000 plus pics to sort out!) My first case of mega goosebumps were aroused by a flyover by “Jumping Jacques” the P-51, I little bit later by the Dragon Rapide, then the Comet, oh my she is glorious..and the Gladiator.. and the Sea Hurricane! I was like a one eyed dog in a meat market..

Just outstanding Wal......I would be like a kid in a candy shop not knowing what to look at first, (probably the DH-88 :D ).
Knotty...we gotta add this one to our aerosexual bucket-list.

Absolutely brilliant set of photos Wally of a great collection of historical aircraft.
What memories to cherish forever of seeing these 'Old Ladies' in their element.

Thanks Wally, you've become a dab hand with a camera mate, lovely photos and the Flickr photos are fabulous,
the self portraits and valley views taken whilst hiking are a bonus. Hope you both are having a great time.

Cheers

Wally, your photos just amaze! Sensational seeing those two Mew Gulls in formation. One of my heroes is Alex Henshaw, with his book "Flight of the Mew Gull" being one of my most treasured books. The story of his London-Capetown-London" flight is one of the greatest feats of long distance solo flying I've ever read.
Thanks so much for sharing!

Cheers
