Huge year in aviation. I think the first Mirage for the RAAF was delivered this year too wasn't it? 1964 is kind of a fav year of mine, as I came into the world this year! :)

From link above - first flight of:

TSR.2
F-111
SR-71
XB-70
F-5
Beech King Air
SIAI Marchetti SF-260 (little beauty!)

Gulf of Tonkin incident happened. China cooked of it's first atomic bomb. Pretty full on year huh!

I had a chuckle to myself at this one.

"January 22 – In its first public violation of the 1959 requirement for all aircraft operating from the aircraft carrier Minas Gerais to belong to the Brazilian Air Force, the Brazilian Navy steams Minas Gerais into Guanabara Bay at Rio de Janeiro with four navy T-28 Trojan trainers on her flight deck."

reminds me about the pissing contest with the RAAF headshed over the RANFAA operating fixed wing aircraft.
