I am working on what I would call a civil aircraft vignette (obviously separate from the non military aircraft category but still "showing the flag" for the new category).. I understand that a vignette has to "tell a story".. can the "story" be explained by a note on the base or must the story be self evident without explanation?

Here's a starting or anchor point Wally:

"....a vignette is a short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment or gives a trenchant impression about a character, idea, setting, or object".

Here's a tank crewman, enjoying a brew, while leaning on his tank. Taking a breather. You clearly get the idea of what is going on and how the individual might be feeling. It's not short of the viewer looking at a painting or image of the same, in terms of what the viewer might think of when viewing it.

When an object (without a figure/s) is the subject of the vignette, then IMHO there is greater challenge to the modeller to convey that 'elusive' impression or feeling to the viewer.

More pertinent to 'Vignettes':

"The following categories pertain to models on a scenic base, which do not fit into any of the single model categories. They may or may not contain figures. The concept of these categories is to tell a story through the use of models.
ME41 - Vignettes
Not limited by scale.
A cameo of a story, featuring 2 to 6 figures on small base with simple scenic effects.
An OPEN category and not subject to Out of Box or Modified rules.
The following restrictions apply:
1. It can include hand held or personally transported equip-ment. May also include horses or large animal/creatures or small livestock.
2. Full buildings, full vehicles (eg ships, AFV's, aircraft, space craft) or large equipment are not allowed. If the scenic effects dominate the figures then the model may be classified as a diorama."

A cameo can be though of as a literary sketch, small dramatic scene, or the like, that effectively presents or depicts its subject.

I think once you clear up the attitude on the 125 in the landing flare, you'll be closer to conveying the 'movement' of the aircraft. The 'clincher' on the vignette is the fact that the undercarriage is not 'down and locked' (lack of '3 greens', etc.) and the aircraft is over the 'piano keys' about to touchdown. Given that viewers will not be readily able to see the undercarriage (or lack thereof), I think your plaque might need to draw the viewer more directly to what is happening at that instant.

OK - many people know about Red Faces and what 'red faces' means ( embarrassment).

What's happening in the flight deck at that moment ? Who completed the check-list actions for the undercarriage deployment ? These questions might help you think of some other suitable captions (or maybe thought bubbles ?).

I like what you have come up with BTW. It is clever

The aircraft was doing a flapless approach.. these are flown low and flat with very little flare so the attitude and height above the threshold is about right. There are 2 figures (pilots in the cockpit - at this moment in time still fat dumb and happy)

Anyway it really doesnt matter I guess I'll enter it for the sake of chucking a civil aircraft in an unlikely category, I mean they aren't going to refuse it a place on the display table are they?

Looks to me like the rules are pretty clear that full models are not allowed in the Vignette category. Ed Russell would clear that up for you.

Ooooo I like them decals and the story behind the model mate. Very nice indeed. Looks like I might have to acquire another HS125 to do as a DCA jet some time down the track

What a great idea Wally , go for it I reckon . I love the look of those DCA decals also . Any chance of buying some off you ?
I can remember CAO as a kid at Essendon , refuelled it years later when it was in the Black scheme .
