Those are magnificent models WAL. I'd like to make some of them but where did you get the decals from?

Lovely collection from you Wally, as always!

2 quick questions, if I may:

1. Ju-52: Where did you get the P&W R-1340 Wasp engines, Wirraway engine cowlings & 3 bladed Hamilton Standard props from?

2. Heron: How did you do the Lycoming engines and 3-bladed props?

The Ju52 was in 1/48. I bought a Special Hobby Wirraway and made moulds of the engine, prop and cowling then cast a number of copies in resin. I had some spares and a chap in South Australia asked me if he could have some, he ultimately built one of his own and won
a prize with it at a model show over there.

The Heron required me to make an engine form using balsa / plastic / filler then again making a mould and casting several copies, a few sets were sent around the world but I have never seen anyone else's finished example there were WIP builds posted on the usual websites but after the kerfuffle with photobucket all the image links dont work anymore, I will have a look in my old files and see if I can repost them

Ok I found the WIP pics, looking at them reminded me of a few things, for the JU52 I had to mould new wheels as well I think I used 1/48 lancaster wheel as a master after increasing the tread width by inserting a plasticcard disk between the two wheel halves.
I could not find Riley conversion drawings for the Heron. There were at least 3 Heron engine conversions available, Riley was only one of them and they licensed Connellan to do them in their workshop for their aircraft. Another conversion was a Japanese company and I have forgotten the other. There were variations even amongst the Riley conversions so you can only work with pictures of the actual machines, I was lucky to find a overhead satellite picture of the Queensland museum heron which gave me the arrangement of the lycoming cowlings on the wing. I started carving a plug out of balsa but I ditched that and basically built a brick, whittled it to shape put some representation of intake on and some exhaust pipes..NOT precision engineering or modelling! just 1 metre viewing type stuff

so all the pics are here in this album:

I just remembered Gibbes replaced the tail wheels as well from memory I read in a book he used Tiger Moth main wheels for this.. I stole this from the 1/48 Moth !
