Afternoon all, have these two -

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/hasegaw ... rt--984891

..and from what I can find online, the first should have 4 x PW PW4056, while the second should have 4 x GE CF6-80C2B1F.

But just checked and in both kits the engine sprue is E, identical -

So which is right, or are both engine cowlings close enough in this scale for it not to matter?

Jamie,

I have build a couple of the Hasegawa B747s, It looks to me the kit supplied engines are GEs, the PW cowls and hot sections are slightly shorter respectively, in 1/200 it would be about 3-4mm overall I'd say. If you have a close look at the box images you will see the ANsett engines have shorter cowls and jet pipes.

Braz Models released a set of PWs in 1/200 some time ago, I am not sure if they are still in production.

Thanks Ray, 3-4mm in 1/200 is pretty decent so might find an alternate GE-engined scheme for the Ansett kit.

If you want to sell or swop for the Ansett Decals I’m interested.

On this subject, are these RR? Haven't noted this type of cowl on a Jumbo before.

No. An Expert will know but they are some sort of extended cowl on the original Pratt and Whitney Cowls. I would guess to reduce noise levels from the original short cowl Pratts?

With the Hasegawa 747-400 kits, they never tooled any PW4000 engines for them. Economics dictated that the GE CF6 engines were "near enough" in appearance, so any airline release which should have PWs has the GEs.

Incidentally, it was only when they first (and incorrectly) produced a Qantas kit with GE engines, did they tool up the correct RR engines and subsequently re-release it!

As for the -200 with the odd PW engines that Ansett A330 and DDG Boy allude to; it is an evolution of the original PW JT9D engines known as the JT9D-70A.

The -70A was developed to use a common nacelle (but different exhaust cone) with the GE CF-6 to make it attractive to DC-10 and A300 operators, but wasn't popular.

Read about it here: http://www.seaboardairlines.org/aircraft/jt9d-70a.htm

Cheers!

Ironically, the original-issue Hasegawa 1:200 Qantas 747-400 with the GE CF-6s would, by default, become "correct" when a number of CF-6-powered 747-400s entered the Qantas fleet.
