I had my first crack at resin casting today and it was a lot of fun. Nowhere as difficult as I first thought. I tried something simple first, a 727 #2 intake for the 1/144 Airfix kit. It came out freakin awesome. It had a couple of little pin holes but nothing that can't be fixed. So for the next thing to be cast, i tried a 1/48 F-16 main undercarriage door as I've somehow managed to lose all the doors of an F-16 I started ages ago. I was rather nervous about this one as it's really thin. It came out fairly well. There's a pin hole in the middle of it and I chipped the aft edge pulling it out of the mold. So all round I'm pretty happy with the results. Just gotta get more items to be cast at the same time so that I use the amount of silicone more wisely.

I am in the same boat, I always thought it would be too hard to create a mould and cast something to an acceptable standard.

You reproductions look great Paul.

Exceptionally well done. What Mould and Moulding materials did you use?

Usually the trick is in the design of your mould and depending on the Resin being used the size and number of Gates and Feeders. The design of the Gates also helps to minimise the clean up of the resulting part.

When it comes to complex parts You'll know you've got it well under control when your first four piece mould works successfully. I'll see if I can find a photo of an example.

And so your next one is going to be ... 737 Wheel Wells?

Not a great example as it was of a test moulding using a trial material done a long time ago in a Town far far away but the nose of this (guess what it is) was done using a four piece mould :

I used Pinkysil for the mould and Easycast resin. Won't be doing 737 wheel wells but probably a lot of F-4 parts 8-)

I was gonna get a bloke in Narre Warren to cast up some stuff for me but I heard he does shit work, can't build a model to save himself and is a bit of a tosser :lol:
