The Next A/CAM Challenge Build

Postby tor lives » Fri Aug 24, 2018 6:54 pm

OK guys, so as the current Airfix 1:144 Boeing 737-200 Challenge Build has been enthusiastically-embraced by most of you, and is now ticking along nicely, I have been giving much thought to what the next Challenge Build subject matter should be. I have narrowed it down to four types, and they are:
- 1:144 Airfix, Revell, Minicraft, Welsh, Frog, Eastern Express Boeing 707
- 1:144 Airfix, Roden, Welsh, Frog VC10
- 1:144 Revell, Minicraft, Welsh DC-8
- 1:72 Airfix, Matchbox HS-125
The reason I am preparing for the next Challenge Build this far out, (anticipated completion target being the Airliner Category, Model Expo 2020), is to give everyone enough time to source kits, decals etc.
So lets take a bit of an informal vote here to see which one of the above types becomes the subject of the next A/CAM Challenge Build.
Over to you lot.

When I saw the Title I thought "Gee that was quick - Airfix have contacted Ray and offered to sponsor the next Challenge Build!".

Then I looked at their current line-up and can't see any Airliners listed! I thought that the 707 and Vanguard were their current releases but can't find them (but maybe I'm going blind?).

Looking at the success of this CB thus far I think one of the factors in it's success has been the supply of a number of relatively (compared with current prices) cheap kits supplied by our internal "Dealers" (Graeme/Tor/Scotty) and one factor that may inhibit the CB's further growth from now until next June is the lack of affordable kits or even lack of kits given it has been 4 years since the last release.

Another (possibly larger) factor of course has been the stunning array of schemes out there for the 737-200.

So for the first factor I wonder if it worth contacting one of the Distributors to see if they can do us a bulk deal on a suitable subject so that we have a guaranteed supply of reasonably priced kits over the next year and a half and let that help select the subject?

(As well of course for the second factor that it has a stunning array of schemes.)

Some interesting thoughts and observations there, but sourcing kits and decals for any of the suggested types really won't be a problem.....that's why they are the suggested types, and why I have included different manufacturer options for each type.
Some come on lads.....start the vote as to the type you want, the polls are open :D

707, HS-125 or VC10 for me as I have all 3 kits in the stash and the DC8 doesn't do anything for me.

I see what you're doing you sneaky bastard. You've suggested these types cos you've got a heap of these kits in your stash that you're gonna offload to unsuspecting peeps at just below exorbitant prices under the pretence of a challenge build. Very cunning

Just thinking out loud, but it might be worth talking to Bill Wong, remember a few expo's ago he had a bunch of 1/100 DC-3s for sale for 5 bucks each? He might have something like that hanging around his warehouse and might be willing to deal if we have a few of us commit to buying.

I'd like to see a subject that can be entered in the civil aircraft category at expo rather than airliners..
Pretending to do it TAC style with the big boys since 1987

OK guys, just to be clear.....I am asking for your vote on the four nominated types. So far only Paul has given me some kind of indication.
Damo, the HS-125 has been included as it could be entered into either the non-military category or the Airliner category, depending on the colours you built it in .....see what I did there :D .

the 707
The VC10
DC8

and I am still to start my 737-200 build yet for this years build, but hey no rush right, I need to get my DC9's finished first
