Attention all A/CAM members

Postby tor lives » Sat Feb 24, 2018 9:41 am

Hi guys,
So after record low Site activity in recent weeks :( , it is now time for me to consider the way forward for the A/CAM Site.
It must said that at the current rate of activity, the Site is simply not viable, financially or otherwise. Having considered all options and suggestions, I am at this point, inclined to want to shut down the Site completely.... and simply continue with the A/CAM FB page, as that seems to be where most activity is occurring. I will be closely monitoring the Site over the next few weeks to see if there is a shift in usage activity. If Site shut-down is what I elect, I will give you all as much notice as possible. Should Site shut-down occur, this will obviously have flow-ons such as Model Expo Category sponsorship, Club Displays etc. I will keep you all informed.

Sad news indeed mate. Totally understand if you have to bite the bullet and do this. You have given and given and given for this cause mate. If the punters out there don't seem interested in A/CAM at more, not much more any of us can do sadly :-( You know my views on the A/CAM FB page in that I've always felt the way it was set up (non-members posting on FB page) undermined the A/CAM web site. Human nature is such that we all gravitate to the line of least resistance. Whilst FB hasn't remotely the features of a dedicated forum, it's ridiculously easy to post on FB.
Perhaps if anyone knows of some simple low cost forum hosting service - simple & cheap as chips, that may be a alternative?

BTW - big thanks for the "pool party" at DCT yesterday - just amazing!

I echo what Adam's just said. Personally, I much prefer the website rather than the FB page, but I understand if you need to shut the site down.
I know there are some free forum hosting sites around - perhaps one of them could be utilised..

Well worth the trip to DCT HQ yesterday and heaps of fun in the pool!

That is indeed sad news Ray, alas as I have no desire to be involved in FB in anyway I will miss reading the regular members comments, photos and humour.
I personally prefer a dedicated website for members as others have said, but as you have mentioned, the running costs can spiral.
Will be very sorry to see the site go but ultimately the decision is yours and yours alone.

Wayne.

Facebook has become so bloated with extra "features" that it barely wants to run at all on old computers like mine (a 15-year-old dual-processor PowerMac G4 running OS 10.5.8, which is impractical to replace for a number of reasons). Forums such as this one, however, work just fine.

Have you thought about soliciting donations/subscriptions to help defray the cost?

Totally hear you SpaceRanger! Even my 2 year old laptop c/w i7 processor seems real slow on FB these days. We have to find a solution whereby Ray isn't totally carrying the can to finance this forum - whether we go back to all paying a annual membership and/or another low cost forum host is found as I believe we don't need all the bells and whistles. The huge advantage with a forum is that it's organised into sections that updates live - FB does not have this function.

There's three free forum boards here:
https://www.proboards.com/forum-help-guide

Under the "Create Free Forum!" dialog boxes..

Edit: and this is what you get..

i understand where you are coming from...like a few of the others i'll miss that site(it's one of about 4 forums i check daily even if i dont post),but it really does seem to be a thing these days .. i hoped the newer members that came over from the facebook page may have boosted the site but it seems not :( ...as Damo has said would one of the free forum boards work?

Good idea. On one of the other Forums which has a donation thing set up with Paypal you get a little "Forum Sponsor" annotation on your ID/Handle/whatever you want to call it.

Other than that what about a Raffle? I'll donate a kit or two.
