What is a civil aircraft?

IMHO a civil aircraft is :
- Registered with the appropriate civil aviation authority.
- Crewed by civilians.

I pretty much agree with you there Lance, though is there a difference between a civil registered aircraft flown by civilian crew when the aircraft was built for purpose, (airliner, freighter, recreational, business jet) as opposed to an military aircraft now on the civil register flown by civil aircraft (F-4 Phantom, F-86 Sabre, A-4 Skyhawk, P-3 Orion, etc)?

Defining a "civil" aircraft is not as cut and dry as it would first appear. Consider for example the ECUATORIANA fleet of 720s, 707s, and DC-10s that all carried duel civil/military regos.....or the Israeli Air Force 707s and C-130s that all carried 4X regos, or the Iranian Air Force 747 and 707 tankers that carry civil EP regos . And what about the RAAF fleet of Learjets and King Airs that carried VH regos. And then there is the NATO fleet of E-3s which all carry Luxembourg civil regos :? .

For my purposes, a civil aircraft is any aircraft carrying a civil registration. Civil-registered converted ex-military aircraft with pure civil applications qualify in the "Swords to Plowshares" division.

Civil registration works for me too.

Even if it is on an F-4, F-18, F-86, A-4, F-102, F-104, F-106, Draken, F-100, MB326, MB339, T-38 etc......as there are examples of these and many other dedicated military types carrying civil regos.

Yes, if they have civil registrations that works for me. That doesn't mean I have to make models of them, I'm more likely to do them if they are painted in civil schemes too. In fact, for a civil F-106 or Draken I'd be very tempted. Any suggestions?

Only civil "6" I know of are NASA birds. NASA originally was gifted/loaned a couple of 6's for the Mercury astronauts, as they were bitching they had nothing to fly. Nice of NASA to give them the best fighter USA had at the time to play with huh! A later test bird from Langley would be a interesting build. Image

There are some pretty good 1/72 & 1/48 6 kits available these days.

Thanks for the photos. The Draken looks easy enough to do but a quick scout around the interweb doesn't reveal any decals for a NASA F-106B. Does anybody know anything different?
