As the title says, how good or bad is the kit? I've heard they're pretty rare, but I've found a kit reboxed by Atlantis..

It's actually not too bad a kit for it's age.
If you get the Hughes Airwest issue, it is cast in bright yellow plastic that will need several layers of undercoat primer if you are intending on painting it any other colour but yellow.
Also, be aware that the model represents a short-body DC-9 10 so has no applicability for any Aussie-flavoured DC-9 subject.

I've seen the original Aurora boxing going for stupid $$ on Ebay, so the Atlantis boxing doesn't seem too bad..

Seems a little expensive for what it is, I sold one to Knotty for about $20.00 .
Remember, it's a -10 which doesn't give you much flexibility as to the colours you can build it in, (the -10 was not a particularly popular variant of the DC-9). Now if it was -30, that would be different.

More expensive but can't you buy a couple and make one longer one out of the two?

(Probably slightly easier than trying to make a 737-300 or -400 out of a Aurora/Monogram 737-100 and a Heller 707 cut perpendicularly and axially!)

(Or a 707-138 out of a Heller 707 and AMT KC-135 for that matter! Anyone know what issue of FSM this was in?)

I made one of these ten years or so ago, from the original Aurora kit which was given to me by a club member. It is simple but looks fairly accurate to me. As with the Aurora Aero Commander I jut finished most of the parts will need some work to make them look less 1960s, and there would be plenty of scope for detailing so, if you're willing to put in the work, I reckon you could make something very nice out of this kit. But, being a DC-9-10 there isn't too much scope for colour schemes and I don't know if there would be any decals for it.

Since this photo was taken the white paint has yellowed a lot so I may get around to giving it a new scheme one of these days.

So the difference between the -10 and -30 is just the fuselage length?

14 ft 9 in (4.50 m) fuselage stretch
Wingspan increased by just over 3 ft (0.9 m) with full-span leading edge slats (not sure if this is 3ft greater than the -10 (89.4 feet or 27.25 m) or -20 (93.3 feet or 28.44 m))
The wing had a six percent increase in chord, all ahead of the front spar, allowing the 15 percent chord slat to be incorporated

Other changes include:

- Stabiliser was changed from perfectly level to 3 degrees anhedral
- An extra 8" plug in front of the engine pylons
- Added wing root fairings
