I suppose that 'Model Talk' is as good a place as anywhere to mention my latest acquisition. I'm down to my last tinlet of Xtracolor Corogard enamel with no real hope of getting any more from overseas. So I took the tin to my local Darby's Paint shop and they made me up a litre of metallic colour that matches the Xtracolor original. It cost $78 but, even better, it's acrylic lacquer so it will spray easily, dry smooth, hard and quickly, I won't have any problems with conflicting types of paint causing bubbling and other unhappiness. I have to thin it, 1 to 1.5, to spray so it means I'm never likely to run out of corgard again.

Way cool mate. Definitely the way to go if you use a lot of a certain colour. I still haven't got to use some of that Boeing grey I got off you a year or 2 ago. Though I do have a 727 on the go so it could happen soon

Interesting idea! I'd love to hear how you go with this when the time comes, Leigh. Both in terms of how close the colour actually is to the Xtracolor original, and how well it thins and sprays.

Nice idea Leigh.

I also have some Xtracolor corogard in the stash.

Prior to obtaining it I used to mix Tamiya metallic grey with a lighter 'plain' grey to get the effect. Since it the original colour fades you can pick the shade you want for the effect you want.

And here is the result of the first use of my new Corogard.

If anything, it is a touch glossier than the Xtracolor Corogard and perhaps a shade darker, but not that you'd notice. Here are two pictures that show the difference. The 727 with the red tail has Xtracolor Corogard and the other has the new acrylic lacquer Corogard. It is interesting that the two paints look darker depending on how the light falls on them, though the contrast between the Boeing Grey and the acrylic Corogard looks more noticeable than the Extracolor Corogard. Overall, I'm not unhappy with the new paint and it was necessary in any event.




The one thing I really like about the new paint is that I sprayed it only about an hour ago while the Xtracolor paint took the best part of a day before I felt safe in removing the masking.

Looks the goods to me Leigh, behaves like the real stuff in variable light conditions.

Looks good to me . Up to now I have been using Corogard decals but, much to my annoyance, many of these have started air-bubbling and lifting over time. So, for the sake of model finish longevity, I think I may have to revert to painting Corogard. Clearly, more work initially, but better in the long run.
