A gentle warning about the French bug which some of you may catch while you aren't being careful.

A decade or two ago I wondered what modelling theme I might adopt to limit my interests to something achievable. 'I know',' I said to myself, 'I'll do French subjects. There won't be many of those.' A fatal decision. All these years later I've made models of 136 French subjects (39 of them AFVs). That's only counting the 'made in France' subjects, not subjects made elsewhere but in French markings.

That's bad enough. But the real horror is that I find I have kits for another 349 French subjects yet to make, again only counting the 'made in France' subjects.

Let this sad fate be a lesson to you all.

No worries for me there Leigh. Apart from Mirage III's, I can't stand much of anything French. I'd rather do my CL-215 in a boring colour scheme than a pretty colour French paintjob. That's how much I can't stand French stuff

Warning - Thread drift alert! WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP!

Well, officially it's exactly 50/50 British/French. I still say all the good bits are British. That amazing and beautiful "ogival" wing design was British as was the bulk of the Olympus engine design. I would also say that the bulk of the early test work on delta wings was British (Fairley Delta 2 and the HP.115).

I have to stand up for the British side as it's deep in my DNA to stick it to the French! My father was English and our ancestry comes from the Normans (Vikings that took a large chunk of France, then went and conquered England - go William!). The French of course have immense style, I'll give them that. When visiting Paris for the first time with my mother, dad said "Paris is too good for the French!". Dad was right!

I have a sneaky suspicion that this site owner does not worry to much about thread drift
If the poms had had their way I am sure the Concorde would have ended up looking like a Beverly ....thank Christ that French style and elegance was allowed to influence the Concorde design .

PS; in all fairness and seriousness though....both the VC-10 and Hunter are living proof that the Poms can design truly beautiful aeroplanes.

Hey, don't forget the Lightning - well, not exactly "pretty" like the Mirage, but oh what an aeroplane!

What I'll give the French is that the British "drafties" drawing up that beautiful Concorde wing most likely used a "French Curve". Rule Britannia!

Was the main guy behind that most beautiful ogival shaped wing a German - Dietrich Küchemann working for the RAE? Without a doubt, the delta wing was of German origin and they were way ahead of the Allies during WW2 in high speed research with the worlds only supersonic wind tunnels.
