Building an A300-600 in 1/144

Postby RayS » Thu Jun 26, 2014 8:35 pm

Well I thought I might drag this over form the other forum.

With a possible release by Hawkeye of the Compass A300-600 sheet I am wondering about doing a conversion using a Beluga kit and an A340. I had seen somewhere (and for the life of me I can't find it now) that some one had in fact started such a conversion. They may have been using an A330.

So is is possible? I have no idea where to start, measurement wise and what parts to use from which kit, well except for the wing root, wings and engines from the Beluga as a starting point and then possibly cut down sections of the A330/40 fuselage. Can I get away with using the tail/rear fuselage of the A330/40 or do I need the Beluga tail group?

Over to you learned chaps!

Ray,
I thought that there was someone on ARC doing something similar.
If I find it I will post a link for you

Sorry Braz models have a fuselage conversion for it

Fuselage (left and right), Tail, Stabilizers

P/N B4KC00 (BACK IN STOCK WITH FITTING IMPROVEMTS)

Cutting, sanding, putty, fitting, matching is required.

Thanks Brendon,

I was aware of the Braz conversion but don't want to spend the $$$ since I have the appropriate 'raw' materials for the conversion. I will have to try and nut it out myself.

Hi Ray , I think you use the wings and engines off the Beluga , and the tail planes . The Braz conversion is the way to go , but like you said the dollars are a factor . There was a couple on EBay .......but they were $90 Aus each .

You didn't see it on Airliner cafe did you ? Just a thought .

Cheers Knotty .

Ray,
Not heard of using an A330/340 back end before, and never personally looked at them in that way, but I guess there is no reason why it shouldn't work, I would think the vertical stabilizer would be the one you would have to look at the most.

I always thought the best way was with an A310 back end, as that reflects what happened with the real thing.

I have a Braz Mk1 fuselage that I didn't notice was short cast on the lower side, and need to work out how to get it together and filled someday, Hawkeyes decals will be the motivation I guess. the other thing with it is that it weighs a ton, and I have doubts about the undercarriage holding it up, I have thought to carve out some of the inside to make the fuselage thinner, just need to work out that one as well.

Thanks Knotty, $90 is a bit too steep for me at the moment. I'd prefer to use what is on hand. i checked Airliner Cafe but all the threads talked about using the Airfix A300 kit.

Just found it, it was in an A310 nose thread on Britmodeller.

Link

I am going to PM the post originator to see if he has any cutting details for the 2 kits.

I also have a cunning plan for the left overs

I might have some time on the weekend to break out the kits and see if they share any common panel lines for cutting the wing roots out.

I wouldn't give up on ebay, I picked up the Braz conversion and an Airfix A300 in one package a couple of years ago for a lot less than that, so something more appealing might turn up later. The conversion can probably be done but frankly I'm not that keen of messing around with kits that I've paid a lot of money for. But then you might be better at that kind of work than I.

I too am planning to do the Compass A.300-600 when the decals arrive. I had a good chat to Mr Hawkeye at Expo and he showed me the artwork that he has planned for decal releases in the coming year. I have a lot of work ahead of me to keep up with him.

Well I now have enough to go on with this.

The chap over on BritModeller sent me a link to the build thread he did on one of the Airliner GBs they had over there. Funnily I was a participant and had forgotten about it.

Here is a link for anyone interested.

All you need is a A330 or A340 kit, the Beluga kit and a set of A310 rear stabs (the A330/340 stabs can be cut down though).

Looks like I will be starting another cut and shut to add to the shelf of doom :D

Now Scotty, time to finish up the artwork for the Compass Scheme!

Interesting read on that, so I'm assuming there is going to be an A330/340 Beluga sometime in the future, possibly Armee d l'Air FOF?

and while Scotty is finishing off those Compass decals, where are the Air Vanuatu DC 9 ones?
