That makes sense as 1/48 is twice the size of 1/96 and 1/24 is twice that of 1/48, so the original scales would probably have been 1/24, 1/48 and 1/96.

1/72 and 1/144 make sense too, but where did 1/32 and 1/35 come from? What's the closest scale to HO?

Ho is 1/87.......BUT to muddy the waters....OO that runs on the same track but is generally UK based trains is 1/76

And to muddy the waters further Airfix put H0/00 on their small scale AFVs even thought they were 1:76.

If you want to know a bit about the origin of Scales there is a very good article by Fred Henderson in the 1973 Airfix Magazine Annual.

I'll see if I can scan or photograph it and upload it.
