a question to the gloss finish guys out there...

i have tried useing future to build up a gloss final finish...with some success and a couple of failures,the finish looks great off the gun,smooth and shiney,but on a couple of models after a while(can take a couple of weeks) once it's been put away on the display shelf i've had the top coat crack up or craze...fine cracks over the final finish...never on my military ones only on one car and one racer......am i doing something wrong or should i use a different gloss for my final coat?

Are you allowing enough time for each coat to thoroughly dry before applying the next???

Thickness I'm betting, it's why the military aircraft don't crack; you just slap a gloss on to protect from washes and silvering, but the others you're putting multiple coats on.

ray in the case of the car it might have been rushed,and as Brad points out maybe a bit thick...the racer confuses me more the final coat wasnt rushed or even that thick..and as people that saw it finished it looked brilliant...but a few weeks later there are fine cracks in the finish,some people i have talked to have suggested impurities or inconsistencies in the future and maybe use a "proper" gloss finish for final coats,i really want to get this right before tackling a couple of the more expensive kits in the stash.

Maybe try applying another coat or two to "fill" the hair-line cracks in the finish.

In my experience Future is not a solution to all modelling problems, and this is one case. These days I use Tamiya rattle-can clear varnishes. One coat is enough (for me anyhow) and I've never had any problems like this. About the only thing I use 'Future' for these days is a thin coat as a base for the decals. I know this doesn't solve this problem, but it avoids it for me.
