My little Spatz

My resolution for 2018 is for more "me" time! So, I intend to increase my model building time this year - either this or the stash is going to get to ridiculous proportions and be beyond my lifespan to complete!

So, helping me get my mojo back is this little Tamiya 1/48 He-162A "Spatz". Spatz is the name given to this aeroplane by Heinkel and means Sparrow. It's of course a controversial build given that this aeroplane had a massively rushed development in the dying days of what was without doubt a evil regime. Construction of this aeroplane was taken over by the SS and slave labour used. Still, late war Luftwaffe holds a fascination with me and the tipping point to build this aeroplane came after reading Capt. Eric "Winkle" Brown's account of flying it. Brown actually liked flying it and said with development it would have been a effective fighter. It did have pretty sensitive controls, particularly the rudder. Over use of the rudder at low speed did often result in catastrophe for quite a few Spatz pilots. The 162 did get into squadron service with JG1 and went on some combat patrols in the dying last month of the war. One Tempest was apparently shot down, so all in all the program must be viewed as a failure. Yet, in three months Heinkel designed and flew the worlds first single engine fighter - quite a extraordinary achievement.

Anyhoo, here's my progress so far. The Tamiya kit is a delight to put together - very smart engineering. Detail is lacking in the cockpit and wheel wheel, but what is there is pretty right, so adding a small amount of scratch build and after market "bling" really spices things up. I will add a Yahu instrument panel because they are so so good and A/M seat belts (on their way from BNA!). Like many Tamiya kits, there is a "main spar" for the wings making fitting these a breeze. Ah, there's nothing like building a Tamiya kit after slogging through building a resin or special short run kit with heaps of issues - it's like desert modelling! :)

Mine will eventually be "Red 1" which ended up going to USA for testing post war. Here it is being test flown by the legendary Bob Hoover - another major reason to build this particular bird. The Luftwaffe ground crew painted the word "Nevenklau" (nerve claw)on the left hand side of the cockpit as the pilot Lt. Gerhard Hanf had a motor bike that shattered the nerves of the ground crew when he fired it up every morning! Image

Thanks Graeme and Happy new Year! Tamiya make amazing kits that are so well engineered they practically fall together. They are often a bit light on detail, yet it's pretty easy to add some wiring harnesses, a bit of pluming, etc and to me it makes the world of difference - plus I like doing it. To me, each of these sub-assemblies is like a little model in itself. There is a separate BMW engine on a stand which will be fun to assemble and detail as well. I needed a fun build after those bloody two Yak-52s that did my head in two years ago! I think after every bastard model, I'll build a fun one just as a reminder that modelling can be fun!

Tiny update

Spatz almost ready for painting. BMW engine receiving pluming detail. Each of those pipes/tubes takes fecking ages - really fiddley work further destroying my eyesight! Engine will be mounted separately on that trolley shown - one part actually finished!

Will it be finished for Expo - dunno. :?

Well, in answer to would the Spatz be ready for Expo was a resounding NO! Just plain ran out of time and pulled the pin Saturday morning of the show. Still Expo did push me almost to the finish line and here is where I'm at right now.

There's still plenty of plumbing to do for the BMW engine and final weathering/filtering and the matt sealer coat to go. I'm about 98% finished. I have to build a new canopy lock, as the one I was working on last Saturday morning went flying across the man cave having sprung out of my tweezers - that was the last straw for Expo!

Smart move to stop Adam, it would have been nice to see it on the tables, there is always next year.

I was suffering major "pressonitis" and the good lady wife was just rolling her eyes at my feable attempts to finish in time with late nights and early starts on it. I could easily had finished it in time if I didn't leave it to the last week to finish. The timeline kept blowing out further and further as is the nature of things. I'm enjoying tinking now with the oiling/staining/filtering which should not be rushed. I've still a dozen or so pipes to add to the engine as well. It will be well ready for Expo 2019 though.

It's just like my "skool" report cards from ages past - "Whilst Adam shows some ability at times, he is often distracted in class and leaves assignments to the last minute to complete - D."

What RLM 81 are you using?

Hi Brad

It's "Mr. Hobby" aqueous paint. I'm pretty happy with the 81. Their 82 was way too light and needed darkening which I did and now comes pretty close to all my references. We should get Damo into the convo - he loves discussing RLM paints!
