SA-6 Gainful surface to air missile system

This is the Trumpeter kit in 1/35 and despite the fact it is Trumpeter, the model is not that bad. Fit is generally pretty good, there isn't much flash or molding problems like I've seen in other models and it makes into an impressive model. I threw some mud on it as from looking at reference pictures they tended to get a bit grubby when out in the field but it also seemed like they were rather well looked after, with the paint in good condition and little if any oil and grease present. The missiles also look well cared for, so no weathering was put on them.

Very nice Brad. Great finish on both the missiles and victor.

Great job Brad especially the weathering effort you've put into it.
What did you use for the mud build up?

Cheers
Wayne.

Way to go maaaaate! That SA-6 is fully sick - looks like it's been doing some circle work in the back paddock! :D

Noice one.

Thanks guys.

Wayne - Weathering was achieved using MiG pigments 'dry mud' and European dust'. I put down the first layer with water, but mix in a little bit of cheapie matt medium so it sticks. Once dry, I go back with a thicker mix of the same (more matt medium, less water) and build up the muddy look. Mix in a couple of different colours and it drys in a nice random pattern. I also mixed in a little scale turf to simulate grass in the mud. Then a little highlighting with Tamiya weathering pigments. I also used the MiG stuff dry on the side of the hull.

The MiG stuff isn't cheap, but it's really nice stuff.

Thanks Brad, I thought it may have been MIG weathering products, as you mentioned, expensive but great products.
I just use pastels either by brush or ground pastels in a weak paint slurry and lighten or darken the layers like you described.

Cheers
Wayne.
